Hidalgo Market (Mercado Hidalgo), Guanajuato

3.7
#1 of 10 in Shopping in Guanajuato
The vibrant array of produce at Hidalgo Market (Mercado Hidalgo) will have you filling your bag with authentic Mexican food and gifts. Located within a vast iron structure originally intended to operate as a rail station, the market opened in 1910, coinciding with Mexico’s centennial celebration of independence. This milestone helped coin the market’s name after Miguel Hidalgo, a leader in the independence movement. Shopping with the locals across the three levels of the market, you will find many food vendors offering meals at very reasonable prices, or you can buy some produce to take with you. You'll find handcrafted gifts at many stalls, and as is the norm in Mexican markets, haggling is expected. • If you're looking for ANYTHING, you're certain to find it here. Food stalls galore, clothing, woven baskets, housewares, toys, fresh fruit displays that are incredible. An experience filled with sensory. One of the best indoor markets I've seen.
  • Very nice place. You can find the best and cheapest food in town. You will also find art crafts at affordable prices
  • Like many businesses this place essentially closes during midday break. Eating counters remain open but have limited space. A couple grocers and a baked goods alcove also remain open but the baked goods are depleted during the break. Outside, a few businesses remain open in the immediate area. Things do slow down and it is a good time to walk around in the area to encounter less noise and traffic. This is a small market considering the size of Leon but it retains its authentic atmosphere.
  • At this market you can buy tons of craft and candies. This is a very good option to visit before leaving Guanajuato. Bring cash to this place, as not all the merchants accept credit cards.
  • I really like this place, but its a little disargonized, but they have regional candies at great prices.

There's plenty on offer for budget travelers, too, with a range of hostels and small guesthouses at very reasonable prices.
