Alhondiga de Granaditas, Guanajuato

4.5
Admire an old and storied building at Alhondiga de Granaditas, a former grain storehouse now containing an art and history museum. Built between 1798 and 1808, the building displays an impressive neoclassical architectural style and bears traces of its main uses, as a warehouse, military barracks, and then prison. Turned into a fortress by Spanish troops and loyalists in 1810, when a group of rebels led by Miguel Hidalgo lay siege to the building, the doors were eventually set ablaze and the rebels killed everyone inside. When the rebellion was quashed, the four main insurgents, including Hidalgo, were executed and their heads were hung from the four corners of the fort. They stayed there until Mexico gained its independence 10 years later. Acting as a prison from 1864-1948, the building now contains several murals and exhibits dedicated to heroes of the independence movement, and a large collection of pre-Columbian art. • The entrance costs 52 pesos, but it is free for students and teachers with credentials. It can be reached by truck or walking. Compulsory visit as a key place in the history of Mexico. Imagine everything that happened there! It is a good tour and sales of souvenirs outside of the corn are the cheapest.

  • the top has very valuable pieces of Mesoamerican cultures, but the best part is the history of the place as soon as its construction, its usefulness and the outcome that took place at the battle of independence. below is quick visit but very pleasant by the symbols of the homeland and the temporary exhibitions.

  • Today we visited the Museum inside the Alhondiga. The building has some history, which is cool...the first battle of the Mexican revolution. There are several good murals and this may be the highlight...  more »

  • Not enough lines to describe what this place represents in Mexican history. Closed on Mondays. On a Tuesday, ask for the guided explanation from the only certified historian. A tip: he will ask what is the meaning of the word "Mexico" in nahuatl. Enjoy!
  • Great history surrounding this building. If you happen to be visiting Guanajuato you have to ensure this museum is on your visit list. Plaza on west side of building often has events.
  • Definitely worth a visit to this beautiful and informative Museum! Many great artifacts, pottery, wall murals...and the building is extraordinary! Go visit!
  • The museum is great and the murals are magnificent. Recommended to take your time to go through every room without a guide.
  • A lot of things to see. It's an interesting museum to know more about Mexico history
