Alhondiga de Granaditas, Guanajuato

#1 of 19 in Museums in Guanajuato
Admire an old and storied building at Alhondiga de Granaditas, a former grain storehouse now containing an art and history museum. Built between 1798 and 1808, the building displays an impressive neoclassical architectural style and bears traces of its main uses, as a warehouse, military barracks, and then prison. Turned into a fortress by Spanish troops and loyalists in 1810, when a group of rebels led by Miguel Hidalgo lay siege to the building, the doors were eventually set ablaze and the rebels killed everyone inside. When the rebellion was quashed, the four main insurgents, including Hidalgo, were executed and their heads were hung from the four corners of the fort. They stayed there until Mexico gained its independence 10 years later. Acting as a prison from 1864-1948, the building now contains several murals and exhibits dedicated to heroes of the independence movement, and a large collection of pre-Columbian art. • Large block of stone that once was the grain warehouse, a symbol of struggle for the independence of Mexico, now used as a valuable and rich historical Museum. Does not go unnoticed in size and layout. To visit!!

  • Very detailed account of México's colorful history. The museum is 2 floors with a courtyard in the middle. The history portion begins at the top and goes by different periods in different rooms until you reach modern times. The museum is well lit, with wonderful information and helpful guides. Really a treat to visit. Highly recommended.
  • Well presented displays and the stairwell murals by Chavez Morado are worth the price of admission. Although exhibit signage is only in Spanish, the admission desk has a set of laminated pages that describe the various exhibit rooms in English. For the special exhibits you're on your own - we saw photography exhibits of various aspects of Cuban life post-revolution as well as one about Trotsky.
  • A very good all inclusive historical museums of history that is located in a very important historical building for Mexico's independence movement and history.
  • A historical landmark of Guanajuato & the country, the place where the first battle of the Mexican war of Independence took place. Now turned into a fairly decent museum of Mexican history, unfortunately none of the information on the displays is translated into English, so if your Spanish isn't good enough, you might not enjoy it very much. But... there's bilingual guided tours.
  • I was impressed and learned alot defenely a place to visit
