Alhondiga de Granaditas, Guanajuato

4.5
Admire an old and storied building at Alhondiga de Granaditas, a former grain storehouse now containing an art and history museum. Built between 1798 and 1808, the building displays an impressive neoclassical architectural style and bears traces of its main uses, as a warehouse, military barracks, and then prison. Turned into a fortress by Spanish troops and loyalists in 1810, when a group of rebels led by Miguel Hidalgo lay siege to the building, the doors were eventually set ablaze and the rebels killed everyone inside. When the rebellion was quashed, the four main insurgents, including Hidalgo, were executed and their heads were hung from the four corners of the fort. They stayed there until Mexico gained its independence 10 years later. Acting as a prison from 1864-1948, the building now contains several murals and exhibits dedicated to heroes of the independence movement, and a large collection of pre-Columbian art. • I think that visitors to this place can be divided into 2, those who just want to know a place historic and those who want to know the history of this place, as well as part of Guanajuato, in any of the two cases you will not be disappointed , there is too much history in this place, too many objects of the colony, there are a few rooms where are some type of room with the head stone of the initiators of our independence, to be there you realize that these stands in a unique place and where they many things and important characters for our country. The cost is very economical, charge you for using camera, but it is also very economical.

  • It was built at the end of the 18th century, in the Viceregal Mexico. Its function was as a warehouse and shop of trade for the inhabitants who came from farm to buy or farms to sell their products

  • Not enough lines to describe what this place represents in Mexican history. Closed on Mondays. On a Tuesday, ask for the guided explanation from the only certified historian. A tip: he will ask what is the meaning of the word "Mexico" in nahuatl. Enjoy!
  • Great history surrounding this building. If you happen to be visiting Guanajuato you have to ensure this museum is on your visit list. Plaza on west side of building often has events.
  • Definitely worth a visit to this beautiful and informative Museum! Many great artifacts, pottery, wall murals...and the building is extraordinary! Go visit!
  • The museum is great and the murals are magnificent. Recommended to take your time to go through every room without a guide.
  • A lot of things to see. It's an interesting museum to know more about Mexico history
