  • Well, renovation, that should happen with old buildings, there is nothing to do. Though bad luck of course if that just happens as you are on site ... The collection of pre-Columbian artifacts turned out to be very limited. I fear that there is only a small part was displayed, as a result of the renovation work. What there was was of top quality, but it really did little. Possible after completion of the renovation again will offer much greater. There is also a first class collection colonial painting on the upper floor. But what especially catches the eye, and that's unexpected, it's nearly complete skeleton of a mammoth in the natural history department. We think at mammoths to woolly giants that along the ice wall of huge polar glaciers by the pleistocene Tundra trudged and shrouded in thick fur Neanderthals fulfilled with AWE. Here, however, according to the explanatory memorandum to a bare variant, completely adapted to the temperate climate of the then Mexico. Though less hair than its northern cousins, but not smaller. The skeleton is truly impressive, by its size, but above all by the huge tusks, which around 3 metres long. They are less curved than those of the Northern variant, and so they seem longer. Also pretty impressive is a nearly complete skull of a smilodon (least), with the huge fangs fully intact. In the small collection antique horse-drawn carriages is one that personally owned by none other than General Porfirio Diaz, the dictator who Mexico scented more than 30 years with iron hand reigned in the period that now "El Porfiriato". Quite an experience. I have seen in Oaxaca's mans original uniform, and now so here one of his carriages. He was certainly not the most likeable historical figure of Mexico, but his role as a statesman with a huge impact on the history of the country and of its time can hardly be overestimated. The collections are located in one of the most beautiful historical buildings of Guadalajara, but, as I said, now in a (necessary) process of renovation. It will after that renovation far more impressive.
