Instituto Cultural Cabanas, Guadalajara
(4.8/5 based on 1,500+ reviews on the web)
Named a World Heritage Site in 1997, Instituto Cultural Cabanas was built in the 19th-century as refuge for at-risk people. The building was unique at the time in its attempt to accommodate these people--from the handicapped to the orphaned. Designed to be on one level for ease of movement for its occupants, the complex was founded in 1791. Today you can wander the courtyards and corridors, taking in some of the finest examples of Mexican art in murals painted by José Clemente Orozco. • One of the greatest exponents of Mexican muralism was José Clemente Orozco, native of Guadalajara. In the Cabañas Institute (which was an orphanage) large frescoes, are totally worth the pena visit them. I recommend taking the guided tour.

  • The Hospice Cabañas, as is better known, is a place that not you can lose to the visit Guadalajara. It is located in the Plaza Tapatía, surrounded by 17 centers Jewelers and facing a long fountain, which reminds me of the Taj Mahal. In the part of the front, outdoor, you will find sculptures by the famous artist, Alejandro Colunga, one of the three most important living neoexpresionistas of the world (his work there is called the room of the Magi). In the interior of the enclosure, with multiple courtyards and areas, you'll find exhibits several painting, sculpture, photography, a souvenir shop, as well as skilled and passionate guides to give you explanation of what will cross,-but you can also explore it on your own. Here, in one of his vaults, is one of the most important works of the renowned painter José Clemente Orozco. It is advisable to carry children of more than 12 years (staff assessment), to leave them by immersing in culture. In addition, the building, which in the past was orphanage, has a beautiful neoclassical architecture, both outside and inside.
