Instituto Cultural Cabanas, Guadalajara

4.8
#1 of 59 in Museums in Jalisco
Named a World Heritage Site in 1997, Instituto Cultural Cabanas was built in the 19th-century as refuge for at-risk people. The building was unique at the time in its attempt to accommodate these people--from the handicapped to the orphaned. Designed to be on one level for ease of movement for its occupants, the complex was founded in 1791. Today you can wander the courtyards and corridors, taking in some of the finest examples of Mexican art in murals painted by José Clemente Orozco. • A space to live the architecture of the period. The Cabañas Cultural playgrounds are its main attraction, as well as the frescoes of Orozco and exhibitions which, at that time, you may visit: culture, architecture and city.

  • It is a very important place in the history of Guadalajara, for his paintings, architecture and the central courtyard, a spacious place and comfortable to enjoy musical events of crooners, cast Mexicans that remind us of the roots and stories of this Institute in their years of service, something that you can not miss a visitor arriving in the city of Guadalajara.

  • It has the most important murals of Mexico by José Clemente Orozco. The paintings are declared World Heritage by the UNESCO. There's an English and Spanish tour with explanations of the paintings. Additionally there are several interesting exhibitions.
  • The best part is the main building where the Orosco murals are. That is truly impressive. But the rest of the galleries were just ok. Nice to wander around though. Air conditioning in some galleries was too cold.
  • This museum was amazing! We went there on a Tuesday and admission was free. I'm not sure if it's free every Tuesday or if it was a one-time offer. I encourage anyone who visits to really take there time to explore the architecture and the many areas of art. I enjoyed the contemporary art the best!
  • The Orozco murals are one of the great art Treasures of the western world. The ceiling and Dome have been compared to Michelangelo's ceiling in the Sistine Chapel. Using Michelin's rating system, 3-stars, worthy of a journey.
  • What a beautiful piece of Guadalajara. Great arquitecture and art! Absolutely worth a visit! There's a little Cafe too!

Where to stay in Guadalajara

If you want proximity to historical attractions and convenient access to public transport, you'll be able to find something to suit any budget downtown, with the central thoroughfare of Avenida Juarez offering perhaps the widest range of options. Slightly southwest of the center, the neighborhood of Ciudad del Sol also offers a good selection of budget-friendly options, while in the southeast, Tlaquepaque--formerly a city in its own right--features some fancier hotels in a more relaxed setting.
