Palacio de Cortes, Cuernavaca

4.5
#1 of 7 in Museums in Cuernavaca
As the oldest colonial-era civil structure in the Americas, Palacio de Cortes showcases the history of the region and colonial Mexico. Built in 1526 as a residence for the conquistador Hernan Cortez, the building originally had the double purpose of exerting authority over the conquered natives. Later the structure became a barracks and jail, housing prisoners of war during the war for independence. Currently the building serves as a museum showing the history and artifacts from colonial times and earlier. You can view artifacts from other Spanish colonies and the oldest clock in America; most of the information is only available in Spanish. • Located in the Centre of Cuernavaca, the Museum is small but very interesting - to learn about the history of the country, opposite the Palace also I recommend the Borda Garden (Maximiliano rest house) has large hectares of garden and a Lake surrounding the House of Maximilian and Carlota. In the surroundings there are very rich and traditional cafes and restaurant. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

  • Fabulous Diego Riviera. Must go through entire museum to see it though. Went with my Mexican husband and they made a big deal of me being a foreigner and had me pay more.
  • Me and my sister would go every summer. I love it here. We both need to return one day.
  • Worth the visit. If I remember correctly, this was Hernan Cortes' vacation home. The museum is very interesting too.
  • If you want to know about the history of Cuernavaca this is the best place to go
  • This museum comprises a whole set of exhibitions depicting the different ages of this region, formerly known as the Cuauhnáhuac, ranging from the ancient settlers to the Mexican Revolution. Can't miss it when you're in town :-)
