Columbia Reef, Cozumel

(4.8/5 based on 800+ reviews on the web)
Explore the rich marine life of Columbia Reef, a shallow dive spot just off this popular tropical Caribbean island. Less popular than its counterpart, Palancar Reef, the shallows here are a more laid-back and undisturbed place to explore. Snorkelling or scuba diving along the interesting coral formations, you can spot barracuda, grunts, snappers, sea turtles, and sometimes even octopuses. The diving spot is suitable for children and beginners, as it has gentle currents. Plan your visit to Columbia Reef and a wealth of other attractions, well-known and undiscovered, using our Cozumel holiday planner.

  • This reef is very similar to the one of Palancar. So they know which was my experience in the tour of Palancar, Colombia and El Cielo, I will repeat what I wrote there that I think can be useful for those who think to go. We went to Cozumel by ferry from Playa del Carmen. We took the ferry Mexico Waterjets which cost us $100 per person roundtrip Mexican (u$ s 5). Actually for foreigners costs $150 but jobs offer it to $100 because they do not ask documents to take the ferry (at least to latinos offer it to that price, do not be the rest). The ferry is large and comfortable and went on schedule. You should take this one which is much cheaper than overseas that was $300. The day before the trip I bought in Playa del Carmen tour snorkeling reefs Palancar, Colombia and El Cielo, in an office near the ferry. I paid it u$ s 60, sold it me Sr Ulises Trujillo de Amazing tours. Do not buy there. Said me that the excursion left at 11 in the morning, then we take the ferry from the 10, reached Cozumel at 10.45 and results that the boat had left at 10. The girl in the company that makes the ride, which is Sharks adventures (which sold in beach of the Carmen Amazing tours) showed me a huge sign stating clearly that the excursion left at 10. The man who sold it to me does not know nor schedules of what sells. Luckily there was another out at 2 pm, so we had to be doing time on the island to not miss the ride. The captain of the ship had little wave, it wasn't very nice, not so the guy who went down to the water and guided us in the snorkeling was loving. Whenever Macaw had to ask please that down the stairs because I wanted that we all throw and another lady and I preferred the ladder. I recommend to bring your own Snorkeling because they give them are horrible. They gave my husband one broken and it came him water, they later changed it but stop could see almost nothing. In addition the tubes are of poor quality, mine that is simple is better than those. I took not thinking so that they would be professional. The lifejackets were also horrible. They were not true vests as dan in Xcaret, but a few more uncomfortable. Being an expensive tour teams should be very good. The reef was not bad, but just as Palancar, very deep for my taste. I enjoy more snorkeling in low reefs where fish are closer. We saw very few fish compared to a trip that we had 7 years to a reef close to Playa del Carmen. These reefs I think are best for diving for snorkeling. Or perhaps as they say here in forums, that to make the docks for cruise ships destroyed part of the reef and there are now few fish. To get there we did nearly an hour's speedboat, but the journey is quiet because there are no waves on this side of the island. Wasn't bad, although it would not do so, since for that price I expected much more. If it were, would other reefs more close and less depth cost u $s 25. As we have already done many tours snorkeling in other countries were hoping more than these famous reefs. And already, I recommend that they cross the island and contracted it directly there is packed with stalls at the dock who sell rides and do not pass a bad time as we did to us.

  • Great scenery under water in it's natural settings. There were mounds of coral with lots of fish around.  more »
