Cenotes Tamcach-Ha & Choo-Ha, Coba

4.7
#2 of 8 in Things to do in Coba
Dive into the crystal blue waters of Cenotes Tamcach-Ha & Choo-Ha. Stalagmites decorate the cave walls of this natural underground swimming pool, twinkling in reflections from the water below. Once thought by the Maya people as gateways to the underworld, these caves make a memorable place to swim and snorkel, with a shallower cenote creating a perfect place for little ones to play. The rock formations in the larger cenote even provide you with diving boards of 5 m (16.4 ft) and 10 m (32.8 ft). The local community have maintained and protected the area; before you enter, use the showers to wash off any man-made chemicals so as not to contaminate this delicately balanced environment. Keep cash handy for the entrance fee. Cenotes Tamcach-Ha & Choo-Ha is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our online itinerary creator, Coba Edition.

It is estimated that there are more than 11,000 cenotes in Yucatan peninsula, the most well known are found in the States of Quintana Roo and Yucatan (same name as the peninsula). The appeal that have cenotes is that they are real sweet, crystalline and refreshing pools in natural caves in the middle of the jungle. However the tourist crowds in recent years causes visitors to immerse in its waters without taking into account blocking creams to dirty water, degrading the environment. These two near the ruins of Coba, cenotes are spectacular, but my recommendation is to ask at one of the small restaurants in the village by the multitude of hidden cenotes that are in the vicinity. I don't remember the name of that visit us, (I think that although neither knew it would put it), but was just half an hour by car debris by a dirt road. Protected and cared for by a small community of neighbors we enjoyed throughout the afternoon water, the sound of jungle, monkeys, toucans, and turtles that were crossed on the way.

We went to Choo-Ha, which was completely deserted! A steep walk down slippery steps takes you to a large cavern with moderately shallow pools. Bats fly around you and stalagmites provide a beautiful i...  more »

After visiting Coba is absolutely needed a break to a cenote. We stayed at the Tamcach-why our children wanted to dive. There are 2 platforms from where to dive, the cenote is underground so it is completely closed. The water is very deep, dark but absolutely fresh and clean.
