Parícutin is a scoria-cone volcano located in the Mexican state of Michoacán, near the city of Uruapan and about 322km west of Mexico City. The volcano surged suddenly from the cornfield of local farmer Dionisio Pulido in 1943, attracting both popular and scientific attention.Paricutín presented the first occasion for modern science to document the full life cycle of an eruption of this type. During the volcano's 9 years of activity, scientists sketched and mapped it and took thousands of samples and photographs. By 1952, the eruption had left a 424meter cone and significantly damaged an area of more than 233km2 with the ejection of stone, ash and lava. Three people were killed, two towns were completely evacuated and buried by lava and three others were heavily affected. Hundreds of people had to be permanently relocated, and two new towns were created to accommodate their migration. Although the larger region still remains highly active volcanically, Parícutin is now dormant and has become a tourist attraction with people climbing the volcano and visiting the hardened lava-covered ruins of the San Juan Parangaricutiro Church. In 1997, CNN included Parícutin in its list of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World.DescriptionParícutin is located in the Mexican municipality of Nuevo Parangaricutiro, Michoacán, 29km west of the city of Uruapan and about 322 km west of Mexico City. It lies on the northern flank of the Cerros de Tancítaro, which itself lies on top of an old shield volcano and extends 3170meters above sea level and 424meters above the Valley of Quitzocho-Cuiyusuru, wedged against old volcanic mountain chains and surrounded by small volcanic cones with the intervening valleys occupied by small fields and orchards or small settlements, from groups of a few houses to those the size of towns.

The most advisable is to make the trip to the ruins in horse, it is a very good experience, if you can't fit people are at your side guiding the horse and give you the confidence to not be afraid. on the road they are telling you the history of the town, arriving at the ruins there is a variety of food stalls, hence ajora if you start up between stones and volcanic sand to know the Church that was there. a tour is pretty cool and great nature, is well worth doing so.

To think that once, the area was just a flat farmers field; then one day a mountain came up from the earth and started spewing lava and ash and continued to do so for ten years, covering everything fo...  more »

It is a place located about 30 minutes drive from the city of Uruapan Michoacan quick and easy of reach, the place where you rent the horses down to the ruins of the Church or of the volcano is very nice beautiful Michoacan village and with very noble people, they still speak some dialect purepecha. Already in the ruins of the Church down in horse is an excellent experience whether it is your first time riding a horse or not. Definitely long distance we recommend the horse and invite a refreshment to your guide, these people live from tourism. Besides that it is a beautiful place and it is incredible what causes a volcano take care of the place as it has indeed useless patches of graffiti in the ruins of the Church. But it is something spectacular and very nice. There are spectrum of traditional and tasty food to eat. They are usually very rich stews with handmade tortillas and quesadillas. It is not expensive obviously at breakfast and rent a horse and some beverages spend approximately 500 or 600 dollars depends on good eating from each person. But visit Michoacan is a beautiful and full of incredible landscapes and noble people. Not everything is what the news say.
