Paricutin Volcano, Central Mexico and Gulf Coast

(4.7/5 based on 70+ reviews on the web)
Parícutin is a scoria-cone volcano located in the Mexican state of Michoacán, near the city of Uruapan and about 322 km west of Mexico City. The volcano surged suddenly from the cornfield of local farmer Dionisio Pulido in 1943, attracting both popular and scientific attention. This eruption presented the first occasion for modern science to document the full life cycle of an eruption of this type. During the 9-year life span of Parícutin, scientists sketched and mapped it, took samples as well as thousands of photographs of this volcano. By 1952, the volcano left a 424 meter high cone and significantly damaged a 233 km2 area with the ejection of stone, ash and lava. Three people were killed, two towns were completely evacuated and buried by lava and three others were heavily affected. Hundreds of people had to be permanently relocated, with two new towns created to accommodate the migration of people. Although the area still remains highly active volcanically, Parícutin itself is quiet and has become a tourist attraction, with people climbing the volcano itself and visiting the hardened-lava covered ruins of the San Juan Parangaricutiro Church. Parícutin is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World as assigned by CNN.The volcanoThe Parícutin Volcano is located in the Mexican municipality of Nuevo Parangaricutiro, Michoacán, 29 km west of the city of Uruapan and about 322 km west of Mexico City. It lies on the northern flank of the Cerros de Tancítaro, on an old shield volcano and extends 3,170 meters above sea level and 424 meters above the Valley of Quitzocho-Cuiyusuru, wedged against old volcanic mountain chains and surrounded by small volcanic cones with the intervening valleys occupied by small fields and orchards or small settlements from groups of a few houses to those the size of towns.

  • I learned about Paricutin from a children's book when I was 10 - the volcano in the cornfield. Was glad to finally see the volcano and explore the area. Staying in Uruapan, it was an easy drive in my ...  more »
  • Visit the volcano is an experience at the top of the emotions, if your strong is not the long distances, don't worry, the size of this volcano will allow you to upload it with a level of effort half, wearing your boots with wide sole and comfortable clothes and a light jacket. The experience of being so close to a living example of the power of nature, will bring to you feelings of grandeur and inferiority, which exceed it to be seeing the spectacular crater. Visit the ruins of a church that refused to fall completely, it will give you a sense of astonishment, where your senses will be ecstatic and your hand will feel the rough outline of the volcanic stone. And to lower the volcano a steep path that will make you feel the vertigo of an angle as a first glance seems unthinkable, but just enough to keep the vertical on your break-even point and conquer the feeling of an imminent hard, also the loose soil will do theirs to stop you and avoid what seems an epic fall. For the more adventurous (and young people) down in great leaps, where you will feel the closest thing to fly. You challenge to write down it in your pending visit.
