Historic Site
Discover a piece of Mexican history by visiting Puerta de Tierra of Campeche City, the only walled city in Mexico. Built to protect the city from buccaneers and pirates in the 17th century, it originally featured 2,560 m (8,400 ft) of fortifications--of which only 500 m (1,640 ft) remain. Walk along the top of the wall, gaining access to views of the city from above. Along the way, you'll see eight bastions and two forts, including multiple museums providing insight into the history of the city. Use our Campeche tourist route planner to visit Puerta de Tierra on your trip to Campeche, and learn what else travelers and our writers recommend seeing nearby.

  • We loved Campeche, such a quaint historic little city and while still very much on the tourist trail, totally quiet, unspoiled and free of crowds. The walls are a great way to start your exploration o...  more »
  • I'm passionate about history, and love historical re-enactments. So when we learned they have one at Puerta de Tierra, I didn't hesitate to pay the $60 pesos for it. The whole thing is run by 4 teens,...  more »

  • We filmed a documentary there. If you're ever going to dress up like Pirates of the Caribbean, here's the place to do it!
  • Excellent historic fort. You can walk along the ramparts and check out the views of the old town. The small museum area is all in spanish, but so is almost everything in Mexico. Well worth checking out if you are in the area and are interested even slightly in pirates.
  • A must do in Campeche.
  • I LOVE CULTURA
  • Historical placr with so much culture about pirates and prehispanic history
