Grutas de Bustamante, Bustamante

(4.4/5 based on 20+ reviews on the web)
Grutas de Bustamante, also known as Palmito Caves, are a group of natural caves located in the municipality of Bustamante, Nuevo Leon. The caves are located in an entrance of the mountains known as Sierra de Gomas, the Bustamente caves are located 107 kilometers northwest outside Monterrey and 7 kilometers southwest Bustamante municipal seat.HistoryThe caves are thought to have formed between 50 and 60 million years ago. During the prehistoric era, the caves were submerged in sea water that is the reason marine fossils like sea shells and snail shells can be seen on the cave walls. Bustamante caves like the García caves which were discovered a few years earlier, remained hidden for thousands of years until 1906. The discovery of the Bustamante caves was in 1906 when a local peasant was looking for palmito plant in the Gomas mountains, when he realized there was a small hole in the top of the mountain, so he decided to dig until he could go into a cave and to his surprise he found a wide variety of stalactites and stalagmites inside.

  • A wonder of nature, the inside tour is 30 minutes, they are not very large but cute, I think they are ideal for small and older adults because they don't have much risk, have a kind of scaffolding or well designed bridges. Arm yourself with patience wait up in the camioncitos or own car is long. Avoid going into weekend or holidays.

  • Simply beautiful what you can see on the tour that lasts approximately 50 minutes since you begin to go up a truck provided as part of the service you pay. 40 per adult and 20 by minors. The rise is beautiful by the views offered but more even the entrance to the cave where are the formations. The explanation is clear and very detailed. And the tour is not so long, ideal when you have children. Although they explained to us that there are more halls of formations that is not possible to enter to see by the sinuous place and also because it is a place that must continue preserving. Highly recommended.

  • When entering the caves of Bustamante takes me a big surprise, the hands of God have been working for millions of years to get these wonderful images in nature. Hidden inside a Hill look stalactites and stalagmites that are quietly formed drop by drop with the passing of the days, months, years, decades, etc creating matching images to objects and things that we see in our daily life. Recommended for small, large and very large since there is access for everyone and even in a wheelchair. Do not let go.
