Grutas de Bustamante, also known as Palmito Caves, are a group of natural caves located in the municipality of Bustamante, Nuevo Leon. The caves are located in an entrance of the mountains known as Sierra de Gomas, the Bustamente caves are located 107 kilometers northwest outside Monterrey and 7 kilometers southwest Bustamante municipal seat.HistoryThe caves are thought to have formed between 50 and 60 million years ago. During the prehistoric era, the caves were submerged in sea water that is the reason marine fossils like sea shells and snail shells can be seen on the cave walls. Bustamante caves like the García caves which were discovered a few years earlier, remained hidden for thousands of years until 1906. The discovery of the Bustamante caves was in 1906 when a local peasant was looking for palmito plant in the Gomas mountains, when he realized there was a small hole in the top of the mountain, so he decided to dig until he could go into a cave and to his surprise he found a wide variety of stalactites and stalagmites inside.

  • It has good parking. Access to the ticket office and waiting area are good. The service of the host very cordial. You raise to their carts that are clean and comfortable; I suggest that when one goes up to them there is a guide while you climb the mountain as for example, the locals told us that in front of the cave is the figure of a lion on the mountain, and truly does seem to be a lion, but this the guides do not speak while in transit. You get to the enclosure access which is very clean and with a spectacular view of the Valley. When entering the cave: WOW. How beautiful it is! I have no words to describe the beauty of the natural spectacle with light system mounted during the exhibition. Everything very clean, tidy and professional. Special for all ages including people with different abilities.

  • A place to admire what nature can do, very accessible to reach from Monterrey, as well as entering the municipality of Bustamante, has adequate facilities while awaiting transport to get to the caves, the main advantage is that you can enter with wheelchairs! Very good facilities to preserve the caves,

  • Yeah, the title is pretty much how I felt about the place. It definitely could've lived without it, but our tour guide's monotone commentary during the tour was pretty hilarious. It's not as chilly as...  read more »

  • A little get away, about an hour from Monterrey. Its very big, but only a portion of the cave is view-able.
  • Impresionante!
  • Excellent facilities, the caves are spectacular. The tour has no stairs and is very well lit, though the journey is nothing short. If going during the week the guide is practically for ti.
