Centro Ecologico Akumal, Akumal

(4/5 based on 420+ reviews on the web)
Swim alongside two endangered species of sea turtle in their natural habitat with Centro Ecologico Akumal. The organization works to protect and conserve the coastal and marine ecosystems of the region, with particular focus on sea turtles. You can swim with the turtles on your own at the beach, which remains open at all times. That said, ensure you don't disturb the animals or disrupt their habitat. To learn more, go for a nighttime turtle walk with a guide to check on nests and nesting turtles, with the potential to see a female lay her eggs. See Centro Ecologico Akumal and all Akumal has to offer by arranging your trip with our Akumal itinerary builder.

  • What a thrill to bathe with huge turtles ... impossible not to see them are many. have become accustomed to humans and so they come quietly indeed it seems that humans don't disturb. but to respect them ... don't feed and do not touch them.

  • I was fortunate to meet Akumal 6 years ago, a charming town, an incredibly beautiful beach of white sand and crystal clear waters where one had the great privilege of swimming and find turtles, fish of colors and even squid! Gave me a great sadness come back and see what has happened to this place, they have taken over the right to see turtles, then one does not can go to sea without support at least 20 people who say that the only way to see the turtles is very aggressively by paying the tour they offer... clarify that turtles are in waters for anything extremely calm a few meters from the coast and deep as they have always been. I do not understand and I cannot accept that if the intention is to take care of, what you see that they make is profit, fill their pockets, bringing hundreds of tourists. The water becomes cloudy by so many people! And turtle support this, since they have been getting used to this invasion. We were there this year in February, it was somewhat confused - authorities suspended the commercial activity of the tour de turtles, then arose on the beach armed military and Rangers. The beach is public, so that tourists could concur normally - just had a rope in the sea by limiting access to one of the areas where turtles are, and some people kayaking prevented one nadase freely. I also saw other horrible attitudes, I saw how unscrupulous they intercepted foreign tourists at the entrance and were told to return to their hotel because the beach was closed - false! Of course, they could not profit! And why could not enjoy the beach? We also saw how other "guides" receiving tourists getting off their vehicles and les continued offering and charging for the tour "discreetly" - despite not having permission - challenging and exposing tourists to have problems with the armed authorities who were on the beach. All very confusing... and only I have a feeling of deep sadness. I have spoken with many foreigners and all shared the same sentiment, not understanding such abuse, and sadness. No gentlemen... protect and profit do not go hand in hand - to agree. Allow access and control that people do not exceed, not stop approaching too much or play - but end with the business because the show is pathetic and the protectionist discourse doesn't anyone believe it!.
