Central Market, Port Louis

3.0
#2 of 28 in Shopping in Mauritius
Indulge your eyes and stomach at Central Market, a bazaar-style indoor market. Explore the narrow, bustling streets and bargain with the sellers for a range of goods, including souvenirs, trinkets, and clothing. Browse the stalls selling local spices, fruits, and vegetables, attractively displayed in colorful arrangements. A good place to find local street food, the market boasts excellent dal puri, freshly cooked and full of flavor. Even if you aren't in the mood for shopping, the trip is worthwhile to see locals at work and get a sense of daily life in the town. Assumed that buy here should be cheaper than in shops for tourists, but the prices are the same in other stores, and may race in the same way. It is crowded and in some areas the smells are strong enough, especially with fish and meat. It is no big deal, but is typical little there is to see in by Louis, which is a city ugly and messy

It is situated in the heart of the capital. Offers everything and more, local handicrafts, souvenirs, clothes, spices and more. We had the opportunity to visit 2 times and just haggle well, that business is doing great. The hawkers are not quite pushy, await customers ready to bargain. Recommended step even on rainy days. Are always open.

  • Vibrant market great to see both the textiles and fruit and vegetables market. As long as you can cope with the locals vying for your attention. Gets your senses working so colorful and stunning fragrance from the fruits and spices
  • Port Louis' famous Central Market, the centre of the local economy. Many comment that it's lost much of its dirty charm, but it's still a good place to get a feel for local life, watch the hawkers at work and buy some souvenirs. Most authentic are the fruit and vegetable sections (including Chinese herbal medicines and aphrodisiacs).
  • Well its the best market in mtius. Variety of veg and fruit at the lowest cost on the island
  • Visited market as part of north tour.. After leaving caudan waterfront passing through underpass and crossing road infront of McDonald's we can see small lane type area where hawkers and small shops. Made few small purchase of necklace to gift my cousins and purchased selfie stick from electronic shop.. Nothing different compared to markets
  • A must for foreigners and tourists. This market is typical to Mauritius.Easy access from Waterfront P.Louis

Where to stay in Port Louis

Port Louis doesn't have a huge range of places to stay--and the city is not the most bustling after dark. Still, you'll find a couple of options here and there. On the waterfront, a few viable luxury lodgings offer amenities such as annexed seafood restaurants, bars, and air conditioning. Alternatively, head farther down the coast for numerous better value options in dedicated tourist resorts. Even relatively small fishing villages have some decent homestay or guesthouse lodgings.
