Le Morne Brabant, Le Morne

(4.7/5 based on 500+ reviews on the web)
The rugged, mountainous peninsula of Le Morne Brabant stands as a World Heritage Site and symbol of the abolitionist movement in the country. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, runaway slaves sought shelter here, living in the caves cut from the basalt rock. In 1835, Mauritius abolished slavery, and a police expedition traveled to the peninsula to inform the runaways of their freedom. Tragically, the community misunderstood the intentions of the approaching officers, and many jumped from the cliffs to their deaths. Book a guided tour of this historical site, and along the way explore the peninsula's unique microclimate, interesting plant life, and impressive geological features. • All simply superb! Le morne is beautiful from afar, but by him climbing it offers majestic views points. The first part is very easy to climb, we go up properly without noticing too. The second ca seems to be a different story. Y went with children I have had to stop in the first half. But nothing the first part is worth a visit! Advice: come early as the temperature rises quickly... I highly recommend!

  • Did a tour with a local guide. He was excellent. He knew a lot about the flora and fauna and about Mauritius's history. The views from Le Morne Brabant are incredible.  more »
  • The view is all that can be seen in pictures. However, access is very dangerous and longer than expected. A part is climbing (without rope) on slippery rocks. You have to go early in the morning, when the stones aren't hot and the Sun does not punish both.
