International Slave Route Monument, while small in size, holds huge significance as a reminder of the price of freedom and the suffering endured by so many during years of this active slave route. Built on February 1, 2009 to commemorate the 174th anniversary of the abolition of slavery in Mauritius, the monument informs visitors of the role this small island played in the slave trade as a major stopover. One larger sculpture forms the center, surrounded by others symbolizing the various countries from which the slaves arrived or where they ended after transiting through the island. The structure stands at the foot of Le Morne Mountain and is a quick but worthwhile stop on your way to nearby beaches or a trip up the mountain.
