La Savane des Esclaves, Trois-Ilets

4.5
#1 of 17 in Museums in Martinique
History Museum Historic Site
Experience a recreated "slave village" at La Savane des Esclaves. The settlement was created in 2000 by Gilbert Larose, a local who wanted to showcase the lives of his ancestors--plantation workers who fled to freedom and lived off the land. You'll step back in time as you explore this replica 19th-century village, where each structure is dedicated to a traditional local custom. In addition to traditional huts and artifacts, look for an old-fashioned Creole garden, which is tended without fertilizer or pesticide and is filled with herbs, medicinal plants, and fruit. Make La Savane des Esclaves part of your personalized Trois-Ilets itinerary using our Trois-Ilets travel itinerary planner.

  • You can see the houses that freed slaves built for themselves. There is a guided tour also but only in French, however you get a booklet with English translation. Apart from. The houses they also show you different tropical trees and herbs on a nice garden.
  • A cultural moment during the holidays. Better know or discover the painful history of slavery and the after. A short and informative tour!

  • Our great guide she managed to make us a nice informative time with a touch of humour, for the subject is that most horrible.

  • A museum open for 12 years, which is built gradually through its founder Mr. Larose, his entourage, his family. He welcomed the young guide including the narration of the texts of this museum us Captivate from the first words. The Museum is certainly now a bit small and grows. We feel the development projects: bravo for sharing this historic, so that this memory endures. Thank you.
