La Savane, Fort-de-France

3.0
#2 of 6 in Parks in Arrondissement of Fort-de-France
A common meeting place among locals, La Savane, once known as the Garden of the King, dates back to the 19th Century. The 12.5 acre (5.05 ha) park offers shade, tall trees, park benches, and walkways. Head to the center of the park to find the decapitated statue of Josephine de Beauharnais, Napoleon's first wife and Empress of France. She convinced her husband to reinstate slavery in the area following the revolution that abolished it. In her left hand she holds a locket featuring a portrait of Napoleon. • It was on the list of sights to see in Martinique and I accidentally passed it while looking for a place to eat. It's interesting because of the backstory that i learned on Google. There was no inform...  more »
  • The Savannah and its place. You can see inside the fort to fort fort of france. You can see the statue of josephine beheaded. This place is very pretty and well maintained. In preparation, there is the Christmas market.

  • 15 years later, the place of the Savannah left me rather indifferent. None of the charm of this place: nothing is highlighted. The beautiful coconut trees or the historical statues. A path of interpretation is necessary as this place is at the heart of this story and the point of ideal departure for a tour of the city

  • A nice, open park that appears to double as a concert venue for special events. I wouldn’t suggest it to be a wildlife refuge. There is a an interesting statue of a (beheaded) Empress Josephine in the park that is worthwhile to take a picture of (see picture), as is the library with its beautiful exterior (see picture). There are multiple food vendors along the park and many accept USD. In low season only a couple are likely open.
  • It has very good scenery and atmosphere. There are also some food stall if you need some snack. The most important things for me is; it has a wifi connection that i can use.
  • Nice, but hardly a wildlife park. There are lots of small food stands nearby (with great gelato).
  • It's a great place to visit, choice of restaurants and botiques. Port close by, Fort Close by, great place to visit in the evening especially.
  • Nice space, fresh drinks & good music at Le Nectar
