La Savane, Fort-de-France

(3.2/5 based on 160+ reviews on the web)
A common meeting place among locals, La Savane, once known as the Garden of the King, dates back to the 19th Century. The 12.5 acre (5.05 ha) park offers shade, tall trees, park benches, and walkways. Head to the center of the park to find the decapitated statue of Josephine de Beauharnais, Napoleon's first wife and Empress of France. She convinced her husband to reinstate slavery in the area following the revolution that abolished it. In her left hand she holds a locket featuring a portrait of Napoleon. • One of the nicer areas of otherwise rather dreary Fort De France. Green and well maintained, often busy with different activities. We were there a week before Carnival and attended the rehearsals. Plenty of bars and outdoor cafes.

  • It is a park with benches or you can to sit down to rest. There are also a few small restaurants kiosks. The tourist office which is located at its entrance in front of the port was closed for Carnival... This is the moment where we tourists we would have had the most need for information.
