La Savane, Fort-de-France

(3.1/5 based on 170+ reviews on the web)
A common meeting place among locals, La Savane, once known as the Garden of the King, dates back to the 19th Century. The 12.5 acre (5.05 ha) park offers shade, tall trees, park benches, and walkways. Head to the center of the park to find the decapitated statue of Josephine de Beauharnais, Napoleon's first wife and Empress of France. She convinced her husband to reinstate slavery in the area following the revolution that abolished it. In her left hand she holds a locket featuring a portrait of Napoleon. • The place is quite nice but the only interest I see in this space is the small restaurant of Bernadette who is charming and kitchen very well. Why are all these small houses unoccupied? Too bad.

  • Parking on the side, kiosks and a statue on the front lawn at the Center, some vestiges of the Fort St-Louis at the bottom. It's ok no more.

  • We dined at the edge of the savanna and so have every opportunity to see completely drunk guys squat lawns and throw their cans on the floor, what a sad sight and frankly I advise not to wander for a woman alone (yet I live in Marseille :-)). It's a shame the place would have to be nice, pretty lawn and beautiful trees.

  • Superb! The space is well laid out and conducive to the activities, the French beach is accessible for a swim at the feet of the Fort St. Louis.

  • As its name suggests it is a fairly arid Park, little vegetation, mainly a big and beautiful lawn that gives a little hindsight on the city, the fort and the port. Also unforgettable No...
