Montagne Pelee, Arrondissement of Saint-Pierre

(4.5/5 based on 170+ reviews on the web)
Cleverly disguised as a mountain, Montagne Pelee is a semi-active volcano famously responsible for the destruction of St Pierre in 1902. A rich display of lush green vegetation greets you as you walk around the volcano. Take a rewarding hike to the top, which presents breathtaking panoramic views of pristine surroundings from 1,397 m (4,583 ft) above sea level. As you hike up the volcano, keep an eye out for the Martinique volcano frog, which is endemic to this area. • A pretty physical hike that starts from the refuge (snack) of the fin. many markets high enough sometimes, passages in the pebbles but the arrival at the second shelter gives a perspective on the north slope. We are not mounted at the top as the Sun beat down hard that day. count about 3 h 30 round-trip for this route already very nice. Do not forget good shoes as well as water...

  • Mt. Pelee erupted 1902 and destroyed nearby city St. Pierre. Last eruption was 1932, but we were told that still today volcanologists watch its activity. We took a scenic "Route de la Trace" from Fort...  more »
  • Complete turn = 8 km, reserved for good walkers, not suitable for children duration = 3 h 30 provide clothes and shoes to spare Parking at the start of the hiking 3 shelters: the first is correct, the second is passable, the third a ruin the circuit is signposted, however not to leave because vulnerabilities are many. Warm clothing and rain. The wind is sometimes violent. Some gaps are very steep, and it takes pretty much practice climbing to climb. Beware the stones quickly become very slippery with rain and the ride becomes dangerous. The mist is impressive and leaves us than a few rare wonderful views on the coast and amazing landscapes. Coffee taken on arrival at the refuge of the fin: perfect before leaving. Hike again in good weather.
