Montagne Pelee, Arrondissement of Saint-Pierre

(4.5/5 based on 180+ reviews on the web)
Cleverly disguised as a mountain, Montagne Pelee is a semi-active volcano famously responsible for the destruction of St Pierre in 1902. A rich display of lush green vegetation greets you as you walk around the volcano. Take a rewarding hike to the top, which presents breathtaking panoramic views of pristine surroundings from 1,397 m (4,583 ft) above sea level. As you hike up the volcano, keep an eye out for the Martinique volcano frog, which is endemic to this area. • My husband and our two kids, ages 10 and 12, did this hike in March 2017. There are three different routes to take - L'Aileron, Grande-Savane, and Grand-Rivière. We did L'Aileron. My understanding is ...  more »
  • Our most beautiful hike in Martinique... and the hardest! the trail is very peak and requires good walking shoes. Bring lots of water. I do not recommend her to people sensitive to Vertigo. The views are breathtaking (even if it sometimes takes a breakthrough between two clouds). The walking sticks can facilitate the descent.
