The Knights Hospitallers, Valletta

#6 of 14 in Museums in Valletta
Visit the lower ward of the hospital established and run by The Knights Hospitallers, where patients slept three to a bed. Take a guided tour to learn about the hospital, the medical procedures performed there, and how it was organized. The detailed exhibits depict how life was for the sick and wounded. Displays also explain the origins of this order of knights and how the construction of the hospital gave birth to the concept of modern-day nursing and health care. The museum is underground and involves descending steps, which may be difficult for those with mobility problems. • We were a little mistake because we wanted to see the nurse. This is not in this place while at the entrance have said yes. It's funny to visit

  • Definitely a must do in Valletta to better understand what the order of Saint John was all about. Anna our guide is quite the storyteller and I could almost smell the garden that is long gone by now. ...  more »
  • It is impressive how this building had a role to play in such a great extent of Malta's history. Go for me, you'll read many things you didn't even imagine (if you're not a historian)  more »

  • Don't waste your time on this "museum", it's a complete let down and disappointing to the last. You certainly don't want to pay 5 EUR to get to see some lifesize wax figurines, tabletop sceneries and boringly uninformative poor descriptions, accompanied by historical inaccurate replicas. or boring cellars filled with junk in the latter part of the "museum". You don't get to know anything about the reasons for the crusades, nor how many have been. You don't get to know anything about the knights fortresses or arming or cultural or economical power. You don't get to know anything about their decline nor why they still exist. You don't even get an overview about the knights timeline. you jump from 13th to 16th to 18th century, without any information what happened in between. you don't get to know why the knights happily surrendered to Napoleon, nor why his occupation was easily broken by the royal empire. You don't get to know anything at all. don't go there, it a money printing machine living in the heritage if the knights hospitallers, that's all... Do yourself a favour and go to see Fort St. Elmo instead. For only 5 EUR more you get historical accurate information, nice artifacts and everything presented in an educative way. And it's just across the street.
  • Worth price for the entrance ticket. Need more explanation.
  • Entrance fee was 5 Eur. Not a large museum, but interesting. Can see the whole museum quickly in about 25 minutes or so. The photos you see of a large hall are not actually in the Hospitaller museum proper, but part of the convention center.
  • Awesome know about the history of that place
  • It seemed interesting from the outside, it prooved otherwise.

Where to stay in Valletta

The small city of Valetta offers fewer lodging options than some of Malta's larger cities, but accommodations include everything from upscale hotels to less-expensive guesthouses. Stay in the city center at one of several old-fashioned hotels to be in close proximity to sights like St. Johns Co-Cathedral, the Presidential Palace, multiple museums, and a wide variety of restaurants. One fun option involves renting traditional Valletta houses that have been converted into rental properties and date back to the time of the Knights of Malta. Smaller bed and breakfasts are dispersed throughout the city. Book well in advance to avoid high prices.
