It was built adjacent to the Auberge d'Italie. Girolamo Cassar was commissioned to draw up the plans. In the 17th century the church was enlarged. An octagonal church was added to the existing chapel. The original chapel was changed into the sanctuary of the church. The church underwent a major restoration from 2001 till 2011. Today the church still serves as the parish church of the Italian community of Malta. The church building is listed on the National Inventory of the Cultural Property of the Maltese Islands.Works of ArtThe titular painting was painted by Mattia Preti. It depicts the martyrdom of St Catherine of Alexandria. Preti donated the painting to the church after his arrival in Malta. The cupola of the church was also painted by Preti. He drew it with painted stucco decorations and ornamental patterns in grey and gold.

  • There is a church of every denomination in Valletta but this is quite lovely - a peaceful study in grey. A quiet few minutes away from the main thoroughfares is worth while.  more »
  • Although this is only a small church, it was the most spiritual of all the churches we visited. The domed ceiling has been beautifully refurbished, and is not ostentatious like the majority of the chu...  more »

  • small church. Imposing structure. very nice details.
  • Church of St Catherine managed by Italian community
  • Valletta Old Town embellishments.
  • Great inside
  • I didn't have time to get in but outside, looks pretty austere. Many times we are surprised with the austerity exterior and interior richness.

Where to stay in Valletta

The small city of Valetta offers fewer lodging options than some of Malta's larger cities, but accommodations include everything from upscale hotels to less-expensive guesthouses. Stay in the city center at one of several old-fashioned hotels to be in close proximity to sights like St. Johns Co-Cathedral, the Presidential Palace, multiple museums, and a wide variety of restaurants. One fun option involves renting traditional Valletta houses that have been converted into rental properties and date back to the time of the Knights of Malta. Smaller bed and breakfasts are dispersed throughout the city. Book well in advance to avoid high prices.
