Saluting Battery, Valletta

4.4
#2 of 41 in Museums in Malta
Battlefield Military Museum
Witness one of the country's most famous traditions at Saluting Battery. For centuries, the battery overlooking the Grand Harbor served as the first line of defense against invaders. Salutes were fired to mark important occasions and holidays, and to welcome foreign dignitaries. Additionally, at exactly noon each day, a shot was fired so captains could calibrate their ship chronographs. The tradition of a noon shot still continues and today is joined with a shot in the evening. Tour the battery, see the preserved cannons, and attend the salute ceremony. Multilingual audio tours are available, as are guided tours in English. You can also book an exclusive after-hours tour via e-mail. • From Baraka we have a beautiful view of the Harbour and Valletta. Below the observation deck terrace (you can get there for a fee of 3 euro) and there is the battery 8. High noon in the historical uniform starts loading ceremony. one gun shoots. It is loud, it is a lot of smoke, there is fire from the barrel. -And for free. It's worth it.

  • It was exciting to witness this moment. Everything is studied in detail. Recommended to the tourists!

  • Saw the firing of the Gun a few times at either 12 or 4pm during our stay, but it is definitely worth the few Euros to do the Audio Tour of the Saluting Battery. If you can, time your visit with the f...  more »

  • BUUM!!! everyday at 16.00 :) Thank you guys for preserving this unusual tradition.
  • Beautiful day at this really lovely spot. A full gun salute with all the ceremony of St Paul's day, one of the must visit spots. We then did the tour of the war rooms (not Lascelles) you do get to see some interesting extra bits but make sure it is a small group. The guides are very good and knowledgable.
  • Lovely view!!!! Ps. Just make sure of cannon times before you wait, because they did not fire when we where there... everyone stood waiting but nothing happend......
  • Quite nice, although when I was there at 4pm only one of the cannons was fired.
  • It is a traditional event from time. From here you will also have a good view of Malta.

Where to stay in Valletta

The small city of Valetta offers fewer lodging options than some of Malta's larger cities, but accommodations include everything from upscale hotels to less-expensive guesthouses. Stay in the city center at one of several old-fashioned hotels to be in close proximity to sights like St. Johns Co-Cathedral, the Presidential Palace, multiple museums, and a wide variety of restaurants. One fun option involves renting traditional Valletta houses that have been converted into rental properties and date back to the time of the Knights of Malta. Smaller bed and breakfasts are dispersed throughout the city. Book well in advance to avoid high prices.
