St Paul's Catacombs, Rabat

4.1
#1 of 12 in Things to do in Rabat
Cemetery Historic Site
Explore the complex of interconnected underground Roman cemeteries, in use up to the 4th century CE, at St Paul's Catacombs. The earliest archaeological evidence of Christianity in Malta, the catacombs display various tomb types, like the baldacchino tombs, which are free-standing, canopied burials with grand arches and pillars. Other decorations within the catacombs include illustrations and written messages. Be advised that the catacombs are very dark, with steep stairs and uneven flooring. They may be difficult to manage for those with mobility issues or claustrophobia. • The visit is nice, but does not compare to the catacombs in Rome or Paris. We came here during the hot hours of the day to escape the heat. It turns out the catacombs are accessible through 20+ entran...  more »

  • Excellent place- only €3.5 and two really large areas to visit. The indoor centre gave much information and had photos, drawings and models to show. When outside the catacombs had an information board...  more »

  • Ancient tombs (quite many of them) which can be walked for a small entrance fee. Tall people might have some problems. Absolutely impressive. Will take some time to see all of the tombs. Not all tombs may be open to public.
  • Surprisingly well maintained and organized, considering the entrance fee is only 5 euros. A visit to this place can give an in-depth look into the island's history and culture. However the catacombs get kind of repetitive after the first few. There should be more information to better distinguish them from each other.
  • Fascinating look at what has been done underground over the centuries. There are many catacombs to explore, the first set is the most comprehensive. It is well lit but take a good torch and you will see a lot more which has not been covered. Well worth a trip.
  • (Don't skip the museum) We arrived there at 16h and they told us to hurry up cause they wanted to close the place earlier. We were asked to skip the museum at the beginning which was stupid because they were no informations inside the catacombs whatsoever. Only hole carved in rocks. Beautiful but useless if you don't understand what you're looking at!
  • Really interesting place to escape the heat of the day. All the information about the site is given before you go in, which means you are generally well informed but have no idea which bit you are looking at as you go around.
