St Paul's Catacombs, Rabat

4.1
Explore the complex of interconnected underground Roman cemeteries, in use up to the 4th century CE, at St Paul's Catacombs. The earliest archaeological evidence of Christianity in Malta, the catacombs display various tomb types, like the baldacchino tombs, which are free-standing, canopied burials with grand arches and pillars. Other decorations within the catacombs include illustrations and written messages. Be advised that the catacombs are very dark, with steep stairs and uneven flooring. They may be difficult to manage for those with mobility issues or claustrophobia. • Don't miss to visit ACE catacombs, explore and see the traces of Jewish and Christian passage in the area, not recommended to people with problems with tight spaces and closed.

  • The catacombs are interesting and a bit humid. Don't go in the hottest hours. Don't go here if you are afraid of dark and little spaces!  more »

  • The pavilions with the history of the catacombs, with the procedures and everything else are modern and well equipped. You'll learn a lot from reading about the catacombs and everything about them. The tour will lead you through different sized catacombs of different origin. Some Christian, some Jewish and mostly Pogan. Avoid them if you don't like crammed spaces or don't like touching old things because the tombs are old and full of webs and such and moss and water and are also very narrow and shallow. You'll be mostly walking being bent. It's very interesting to see the cavities where the babies were put, the the places where adults were put and the tables on which they mourned and feasted after their loved ones died. Gift shop at the end and clean toilets with some Roman history. Soap dispensers didn't work on men's side sadly.
  • Great if you're interested in history, fascinating structures right underneath your feet. Fully enjoyed our visit. I would note for any readers however, that due to the nature of these archaeological sites, access is via stairwells, there is low lighting, low ceilings and narrow passageways. Fine for us, just not suited to all.
  • An amazing location, fantastic, awesome,, if I was to be critical there were a couple of things. 1/ no information in the catacombs explaining various features etc. 2/ we were on catacombs overload by the time we had got around all 25 sets of catacombs. All in all a awesome experience, well done!
  • Very interesting if you like history. Each catacomb are different but they are clearly explained. Just be careful as some have low ceilings and low lighting.
  • The jewel in the crown so far.Its worth ten stars. The girls who work there are so friendly. If you want to see something please visit.Im currently on holiday in malta.11.11.2017.photographs to follow. If you're in malta pay this place a visit.Don't miss out.don't forget to get an audio guide.2 euros.money well spent.
