St Paul's Catacombs, Rabat

4.0
Explore the complex of interconnected underground Roman cemeteries, in use up to the 4th century CE, at St Paul's Catacombs. The earliest archaeological evidence of Christianity in Malta, the catacombs display various tomb types, like the baldacchino tombs, which are free-standing, canopied burials with grand arches and pillars. Other decorations within the catacombs include illustrations and written messages. Be advised that the catacombs are very dark, with steep stairs and uneven flooring. They may be difficult to manage for those with mobility issues or claustrophobia. • The catacombs are in an amazing condition considering the age of the structures. There are over 20 separate catacombs which you can visit. The museum does a fantastic job of providing the history of t...  more »
  • I wonder if one there walking, probably lose w.. In General, nothing particularly interesting. In Roman times the catacombs were used as a cemetery. During the time of persecution of Christians there were conducted the secret service of the first Christians. And during the second world war, the catacombs were used as bomb shelters. And that's all. We have included in the catacombs tour of Mdina. I do not recommend to go there specifically.

  • Well done tourist attraction very educational but once you have seen the first block everything else is the same. No bones on show.  more »

  • Really fascinating facts about Romans and their burial rituals here, also cool walking on a glass floor in the museum bit that shows part of the catacombs beneath you. The first catacomb is very big and pretty sure you can walk into almost every nook and cranny! Really enjoyed it, but there are roughly 24 different catacombs there that are all identical and much smaller so after doing 3 or 4 we left.
  • We arrived very late at this site. We only had an hour so we had to rush our visit. It is a very interesting site. Actually there are two sites on opposite sides of the road. It's important to take your time at the interpretative centre before visiting the catacombs themselves so that you know what you're looking at. If you like history and archaeology you'll love this. Unfortunately I didn't take any photos as we were caught for time.
  • Great attraction, the renovations have upped the standard of the location. Lighting is now so much better. Since the catacombs are practically a maze, it would be good if arrows are placed so anyone can follow and ensure the location is seen in its entirety.
  • These catacombs were surprisingly well preserved and informative. You can purchase tickets at a student discount as well. The museum is modern at the start with accompanying information on the catacombs. Afterwards, the catacombs themselves are just beautiful. Inside they are small and dark, really giving you a sense of their history. If you go through every catacomb, you could stay here a could 2-3 hours.
  • Have been in the church catacombs which are rather bare and below ground, a bit mysterious and you should be careful about walking up and down narrow steps with not a great deal of lighting. It's really worthwhile a visit inside the Baroque chapels where you can also find helpful guidance and exhibits about the catacombs.
