Hal Saflieni Hypogeum - CLOSED, Paola

Categories: Ruins, Monuments, Tourist Spots
Venture into one of the very few accessible underground prehistoric structures in the world at Hal Saflieni Hypogeum - CLOSED. The elaborate system of subterranean chambers dates back to around 3,000 BCE and is on the World Heritage List. The site was presumably once an underground sanctuary that later turned into a necropolis. See the distinctive architecture and red ochre paintings on the walls. The site includes a visitor center that offers multimedia presentations and information about the structure and the lost civilization that built it. Due to its layout, the necropolis is not wheelchair accessible and people who suffer from claustrophobia might feel uncomfortable inside the chambers. Make a reservation online in advance, as the site is popular and space is limited. • Pre dating the pyramids, the Hypogeum is the only underground burial chamber on the islands. Only a limited number of people are allowed in daily to protect the place. Pre booking is recommended. Awesome, Fantastic, mysterious place.
  • Interesting historical site. Tour is rather short, though. And since little is known about the ruins, it left me wanting more. I think there are mote efficient ways of spending €30 in Malta
  • They don't sell tickets here. You have to go somewhere else miles away to get tickets days in advance. Makes no sense.
  • must visit. stunning structures. please book ahead though, there are some slots available immediately, but its rare.
  • Fantastic! A must see if you have an interest in history. Truly unique place. Make sure to book months in advance though.
