Hal Saflieni Hypogeum, Paola

Venture into one of the very few accessible underground prehistoric structures in the world at Hal Saflieni Hypogeum. The elaborate system of subterranean chambers dates back to around 3,000 BCE and is on the World Heritage List. The site was presumably once an underground sanctuary that later turned into a necropolis. See the distinctive architecture and red ochre paintings on the walls. The site includes a visitor center that offers multimedia presentations and information about the structure and the lost civilization that built it. Due to its layout, the necropolis is not wheelchair accessible and people who suffer from claustrophobia might feel uncomfortable inside the chambers. Make a reservation online in advance, as the site is popular and space is limited. Make Hal Saflieni Hypogeum a part of your Paola vacation plans using our Paola trip itinerary planning website .

  • Indeed it worths the visit considering its age. However, I would recommend it without any second thought, had the ticket been of up to 20 euros. 40 euros I paid (last minute ticket from the war museum...  more »
  • We made a special weekend trip back to Malta to visit the Hypogeum, as we'd been unable to get tickets for it when we were there last year - and it was absolutely worth the whole trip. An astonishing ...  more »
  • With 35 euros a ticket makes the attraction prohibitive for a cheap break in Malta. With the 5 euros all you see is a few minutes of video that you could see it on the Internet. Even the souvenir shop had very high prices.

  • **YOU NEED RESERVATIONS!** When we arrived, we had a hard time finding a parking spot. We finally were able to park our car and after a few minutes of walking we arrived and ... the Hypogeum was booked 'till next month. What a bummer! We checked the website before we went there and we didn't see anything about reservations or buying tickets a while before your visit. So that was pretty annoying. The man working there said nothing, just showed us a card with "booked 'till 13/11/2018". He gave no explenation. A bit rude.
  • We saw the audiovisual tour as the tour of the site itself was booked for the next 2 months. If you want to view the site itself be sure to book months ahead! Having said that the audiovisual tour is also good quality and gives you a good impression of the site and its historical relevance without burdening the sensitive environment of the hypogeum. Definitely worst visiting this mysterious site!
  • Enjoyed this site! Remember you need to book well in advanced to see ! You are restricted to seeing the area with a guide, and there is a limited number of people allowed per day. Expensive but worth it!
  • Interesting information of the audio guide, but to see the underground temple itself you have to book tickets for several months in advance. In the middle of September the schedule was booked till end of November. We could only get in and listen to audio guide, but not to see the temple, sadly.
  • Horrible horrible staff. For a UNESCO heritage site they were unbelievably rude. I would love to recommend this, as the history is amazing, but be prepared to be treated like dirt.
