Hal Saflieni Hypogeum, Paola

Must see · World heritage site · Ruin · Monument
Venture into one of the very few accessible underground prehistoric structures in the world at Hal Saflieni Hypogeum. The elaborate system of subterranean chambers dates back to around 3,000 BCE and is on the World Heritage List. The site was presumably once an underground sanctuary that later turned into a necropolis. See the distinctive architecture and red ochre paintings on the walls. The site includes a visitor center that offers multimedia presentations and information about the structure and the lost civilization that built it. Due to its layout, the necropolis is not wheelchair accessible and people who suffer from claustrophobia might feel uncomfortable inside the chambers. Make a reservation online in advance, as the site is popular and space is limited. Make Hal Saflieni Hypogeum a part of your Paola vacation plans using our Paola trip itinerary planning website.

  • A very well organised tour of a unique place in Malta. Definitely worth going, even for the locals, especially while the low touristic season continues. More half-price events should be organised...  more »
  • What an incredible place! We were lucky to find a spot around new year. Incredible history and the tour is very well done. The gift shop is cute and we bought a lot with vouchers afterwards. We are...  more »
  • This was top of my list and so pleased we were able to do the tour. Fascinating history as it dates back to 2500 BC and for those spiritually inclined the Oracle Chamber.  more »
  • If only they allowed photography. You arrive at the front of the Hypogeum and are likely to wonder whether you are in the right place. It is in the middle of a densely populated area and it's entrance is unassuming. Just remember that the majority of the tour is underground. YOU MUST MAKE RESERVATIONS IF YOU WANT TAKE THE TOUR. Amazing!
  • Very interesting historical site. Good visitor facilities. Very strict and limited on numbers of people who enter. As this is a UNESCO World Heritage Site you are not allowed to walk directly in the rooms. However, the walkways enable easy access to the most interesting areas. Nice video presentation before the tour.
  • An exceptional historical/cultural site. A must visit while in Malta. This site is so unique and beautiful. It is underground which is what makes it so unique; and you can walk through it to see what it's like. There is an above ground exhibit to get you context about what it's about but once you get down there, prepare to be in awe of how it was dug out with just human labour. A disclaimer though, if you are uncomfortable of small/narrow spaces and being underground in general, I would not do this. Otherwise, you have to book this one weeks in advance! There are a limited number of visitors allowed and they are scheduled. You probably won't get in if you go the day of.
  • A must see for anyone who is a repeat visitor to Malta. Careful preservation does restrict some enjoyment of the site, but it's understandable. It would be nice to be able to take photos though.
  • Incredible that we’ve been able to preserve these underground structures after all these years ! Definitely worth the UNESCO stamp. They only limit visits to 80 people (8 tours of 10 people) per day so book at least a month in advance or grab those last minute tickets from Fort St Elmo / the Citadel the day before. The only thing is that it’s on the pricey side (especially since I’ve been told they’re similar to catacombs around Malta which you can practically see for free)
