Hal Saflieni Hypogeum, Paola

4.1
#13 of 48 in Historic Sites in Island of Malta
Venture into one of the very few accessible underground prehistoric structures in the world at Hal Saflieni Hypogeum. The elaborate system of subterranean chambers dates back to around 3,000 BCE and is on the World Heritage List. The site was presumably once an underground sanctuary that later turned into a necropolis. See the distinctive architecture and red ochre paintings on the walls. The site includes a visitor center that offers multimedia presentations and information about the structure and the lost civilization that built it. Due to its layout, the necropolis is not wheelchair accessible and people who suffer from claustrophobia might feel uncomfortable inside the chambers. Make a reservation online in advance, as the site is popular and space is limited. 5,000 or more years ago, the then-inhabitants of Malta built this sacred cemetery where they piled up their dead. The place is a UNESCO site. BUT... you'll have to RESERVE online in order to visit it,...  more »

Reservation mandatory and long in advance (possibility of booking over the internet before the stay). Impressive site, short but rewarding tour (audio guide provided) that begins with a film presenting the site, PMR access possible. It is always touching to browse an original site that has been shaped by a people, there are thousands of years, that other sites can no longer to preserve. Also impressed by the energy and the time it took these men to achieve this underground site. For example to do with temples of Hagar Qim and Mnajdra to see some architectural similarities.

Incredible to be closer to something so old and well preserved. Staff not v friendly - felt like they just wanted to get us out fast. Overpriced IMO. Hagar Qim better if you're on a budget.

Well... A little expensive for 45 min but I understand it. I enjoyed the visit. When you realize that site was carved 5000 years ago by people we consider primitive, the impression is even bigger.

We went there when there was a thunder storm overhead. The sound in there was amazing. It is a wonderfull place to visit but maybe difficult for people with walking problems.

Smaller than you'd think based on the description, but truly unique and ancient

This place is better than Stone henge london. It is amazing what these people did in candle light the attention to detail and the acoustics in a place that is carved out of rock. A must see for the ancient history buff. Pre book your ticket, as just showing up wont guarantee entry. Not wheel chair accessable. Be carefull if you are taller than 5'10 as there are low sections of ceiling.
