Rotunda of Mosta, Mosta

Learn about the German bomb that pierced the dome of Rotunda of Mosta during World War II and failed to explode, sparing the lives of hundreds of people. See a replica of the 200 kg (660 lb) bomb in the church, which was designed by Maltese architect Giorgio de Vasse and built between the 1830s and 1860s. View the intricate carvings within the church and admire the third-largest church dome in Europe, closely based on the dome of the Pantheon in Rome. Remember to wear clothing that covers your shoulders before you enter the church, or borrow one of the scarves available at the door. The church has varying hours, so be sure to check opening hours online prior to your visit. • Inside, it is not as pretty as the cathedrals of Mdina or especially La Valetta. However the enormous dome leaves you with your mouth open. It is also surprising that a not very large village has a special Church.

  • Beautiful ceiling and of course the miracle that took place in this Church was amazing! The bomb did not explode and no one was injured! Basically a baroque Church with all its ornateness.  more »

  • Stunning.People told me i ought to visit. It does feel strange taking photographs in a church. To be truthful the last time i prayed was the night before the first gulf war started.i sat on a box and sang abide with me as i sat alone and looked at the stars.I always think of a mate of mine when i visit a church. His name was John,Royal Marines Commando, and sadly he's joined the ranks of the absent friends.I lit a candle, and said a few words and cut on.The church is pretty and when i was there was full of coach parties. If you are into such things i say go and take a look.
  • Beautiful building, lovely history. Just feels like a tourist trap with no really feeling inside the place. I like to visit fro. Time to time, but I avoid anyone selling things.
  • The Rotunda itself is impressive, worth to see for sure but there is not much to see anything else in the area beside that, few shops and 1-2 cafes
  • An absolute wonder how the previous generations managed to build this Rotunda Church. Dressed interiorly in neo classical style, I was in awe of the immensity of the whole dome. You can't help but feel how small man is inside this enormous circular church. Definitely a good but challenging photo op. Mere compact camera lenses or mobile phone cameras just don't hv the angle to catch the whole scene.
  • Malta's most beautiful church. An impressive rotunda with a legendary history. The tunnels underneath the church are open once a year and are not to be missed for the those interested in WW2 history.
