Ta' Hagrat Temples, Mgarr

The Ta' Ħaġrat temples in Mġarr, Malta is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with several other Megalithic temples. They are amongst the most ancient religious sites on Earth. The larger Ta' Ħaġrat temple dates from the Ġgantija phase ; the smaller is dated to the Saflieni phase .LocationTa' Ħaġrat is on the eastern outskirts of the village of Mġarr, roughly one kilometer from the Ta' Skorba temples. Characteristics of the Ta' Ħaġrat façade resemble those in the Ta' Skorba complex.Temple ComplexThe excavation of plentiful pottery deposits show that a village stood on the site and predates the temples themselves. This early pottery is dated to the Mġarr phase (3800-3600 BCE).Ta' Ħaġrat is built out of lower coralline limestone, the oldest exposed rock in the Maltese Islands. The complex contains two adjacent temples. The smaller temple abuts the major one on the northern side. The two parts are less regularly planned and smaller in size than many of the other neolithic temples in Malta. Unlike other megalithic temples in Malta no decorated blocks were discovered; however a number of artifacts were found. Perhaps most intriguing is a scale model of a temple, sculpted in globigerina limestone.

  • Went here as we had the Heritage Malta Multi-site pass and it was close to where we were staying but wouldn't have paid to go in otherwise as there isn't too much to see. However there is a good amoun...  more »
  • This temple is not soooo busy visiting and open only on 3 days a week. You have to buy elsewhere in advance tickets (other, larger sight or in the archaeological museum in Valletta, as examples). Unless you have the 30 days pass, then Ta Ta'hagrat is included. With the bus are easy to reach, just a short walk and you is there. A place to stay, where you can feel the unique atmosphere in relative solitude. We have visited the same 2 x TA Ta'hagrat because us has liked it there so much. Should you example of Valletta or like out bus on the road you can visit this place very well and then continue. We did so and went to a lunch Bay further to the Golden. :)

  • This should be a fantastic attraction, but it is almost always closed, has almost no information provided, is terribly difficult to find if you're not local, and has no facilities.  more »

  • Im on holiday here and hate to do bad reviews.I had asked at tourist information office for bus details. She got on the website and confirmed i had to catch bus 101.The bus goes every hour.just missed the bus.It turned out the temple was closed anyway.I took two photographs. Not much else to do in the circumstances and the site is very small.Anyone for tennis? Can't believe people book and pay to come here.Petra was somewhat better.enjoy your holiday folks.13.11.2017..
  • Certainly worth visiting if you like ancient ruins. I was the only person there at opening time. While small, the site has a couple of interesting features.
  • The ruin is small but pretty cool. BUT you have to buy a ticket and the instructions on the gate are wrong. Once we eventually found the council offices where they were sold it was shut and there is no other way to get tickets. The site is open till 16:30 but the council offices shut at 11:30!! Waste of a journey.
  • Frustrating entry process...have to buy a ticket off-site with restricted hours. But Nice to see a less developed site too.
  • Really wonderful and great. I actully in imgarr and i live next to it. You see peoples past lives and see how different is from 2500-3600 till 2017. Its a big difference x. #happymgarr #happyhagrat x
