Fort St. Angelo (Maltese: Forti Sant'Anġlu or Fortizza Sant'Anġlu) is a bastioned fort in Birgu, Malta, located at the centre of the Grand Harbour. It was originally built in the medieval period as a castle called the Castrum Maris (English: Castle by the Sea; Italian: Castello al Mare). It was rebuilt by the Order of Saint John as a bastioned fort called Fort Saint Angelo between the 1530s and the 1560s, and it is best known for its role as the Order's headquarters during the Great Siege of Malta of 1565. A major reconstruction to designs of Carlos de Grunenbergh took place in the 1690s, giving the fort its current appearance.

The fort was garrisoned by the British from 1800 to 1979, at times being classified as a stone frigate known as HMS Egmont or later HMS St Angelo. The fort suffered considerable damage during World War II, but it was later restored. In 1998, the upper part of the fort was handed to the Sovereign Military Order of Malta. Fort St. Angelo has been on Malta's tentative list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 1998, as part of the Knights' Fortifications around the Harbours of Malta.

  • It’s an amazing sight from across the water but when we went to see it and paid I think 10 Euro to get in, we were a bit disappointed. Fairly boring, not much there. Not sure if some of it was closed....  more »

  • We spent some hours as it's a historical, interesting fort. Some information were really interesting. It's full of easy access features but with the pushchair/baby we could not take advantage of it.
  • Fort St. Angelo in Birgu Built by the Knights over the ruins of a castle dating back to Norman times, Fort St. Angelo lies at the tip of Birgu (Vittoriosa), one of the Three Cities. The fort provided safety to the harbour and also to the inhabitants of the area who used it as a refuge during frequent raids. It was later used by the French army as their headquarters, followed by the British Army and the British Navy. It has undergone restoration works over the past years and since 2016 is open to the public.
  • One of the best museums I've ever visited. If you love war history then you should totally spend 2-3 hours of your time to explore it thoroughly. Googling a little about Malta's history beforehand, can make it even more interesting. It has amazing view and it's a great place to take photos. It also gives you the opportunity to learn about the everyday life of the people that lived there, through many video-interviews. The ticket price was reasonable. The gift shop had really cute stuff and good prices.
  • Really cool fort. Recommended if you are in Valletta. Take the small boats from Valletta for 2 Euros to the 3 cities. The boat will just drop you off next to the fort. Entry is 8 euros but worth it. Really nice views to Valletta and the harbour.
  • Visited on victory day so lots going on - historical military re-enactments, Bishops blessing etc. The museum is very informative without being too much. Buildings are amazing and appears to have benefited from recent substantial investment. Great views of Grande Harbour too.
