Tsunami Monument, Male

#11 of 22 in Things to do in Male
Tsunami Monument honors the victims of a 2004 tsunami that claimed the lives of more than 100 people, destroyed countless buildings, and left nearly two-thirds of Male flooded in the aftermath. The spiraling monument stands on the edge of the sea in memory of those who were affected by the tragedy. Ponder the incredible power of nature as you look out over the sobering memorial and the waters beyond. Plan my day in Male using traveler tips and tourist information provided by Inspirock.

The monument is located on the opposite side of the island of the port of Malé. You can go for $ 2.00 taxi there. The area is not very nice, pretty dirty and many construction sites. The monument itself is quite interesting, because it symbolizes the height of the wave. The names of all those who have lost their lives in the Maldives by the tsunami are engraved there.

I saw the monument while travelling from Villingili to Male. Those snapshots were taken from the ferry. Nice artistic monument. Beautiful colours of this monument can only be seen at night.

Where to stay in Male

Due to the city's dense population, you may be hard-pressed to find spacious accommodations at any time of year in Male. If you're here in transit to one of the surrounding resorts, you may not be able to avoid Male's high prices, as transfers to the islands are generally only possible during daylight hours. The rooms in the hotels, bed and breakfasts, and guesthouses of Male are on the whole clean, if basic. For more affordable options head to the nearby isle of Hulhumale: a ten-minute boat ride away, this spot proves popular with backpackers.
