Turtle Island Park, Sandakan

(4.1/5 based on 500+ reviews on the web)
Admire the nature of some of the earth's slowest inhabitants at Turtle Island Park. Providing a safe habitat for the endangered green and hawksbill turtles, the park offers the opportunity to see turtle landings at night. You'll need to join an organized tour to access the attraction, which includes an overnight stay in the onsite accommodations. After dark is the time to catch sight of the turtles coming in and laying their eggs, which rangers then take into the hatchery for protection. It's not all about the turtles, though: their natural enemy, giant monitor lizards, also live in the park, along with eagles and sharks. Note that the hour boat ride to the park can induce a bit of seasickness, so plan ahead. Work out when and for how long to visit Turtle Island Park and other Sandakan attractions using our handy Sandakan vacation generator.

  • To sit and wait with bated breath in "power Ranger" who call on us that a turtle is about to dig their eggs-pit ... and then in the darkness find their way along the beach, knowing that Chiba lies in wait hoping to get themselves a sköldpaddeägg ... is absolutely magical. Everything is arranged with animal welfare in the first place. You may not use the Flash/lights, one must not run around the island on your own. ... It is filled with reverence for nature. Arrive at the pit (the turtle has during a one-hour time scrambled up along the beach and dug his pit). The female laid 120 eggs during about 5 minutes time. B. may not move, but feel free to photograph (still no Flash). Responsible people gathered up the eggs for further burial away from varanernas the hungry gap. The turtle measured approx. 1 x 90 cm. Then there was the release of newly hatched sköldpaddeungar. Again, under the arranged circumstances so that they would clear themselves from both birds and monitor lizards. Of course, one must not clap or touch these little wonders, but the feeling that arises when you see these little kids waving – down to the sea is incredibly touching. Truly "as in a dream!" The cabins to live in is simple, but works nicely. OK, shower and toilet. Food is served in the common room, really good!

  • Location from cristal quest is more East at the harbour. Just walk the main road and after 10 min it is in the right hand side. Amazing stay at the island.
