Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary, Sandakan

4.0
#2 of 8 in Parks in Sandakan
Visit the home of the island's most iconic natives at Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary. Founded in 1994 by a benevolent developer, the reserve protects around 60 of the seriously endangered primates, supplementing their diet and keeping track of their numbers. Visit the center at feeding time to watch the families of these pot-bellied, large-nosed monkeys emerge from the jungle, and take a walk across the reserve to observe them searching for food in their natural habitat. • Very cool place. We were there first in the morning and alone and the apes surrounded us. They are friendly but showing how's territory is that. :-D
  • Having yourself to see Proboscis monkey (and if you're lucky orang utan too) in front of eyes. Their unique yet cute nose will definitely catch our eyes. I don't remember how much the entrance fee was but the experience definitely worth the price. This place is the natural habitat of the monkeys and I got to see staff gave them food and the monkeys would come and enjoy eating. The way the staff shouted calling the monkeys sounded unique. There were also another types of monkeys joined the feast. Don't worry they are all behave well and not threatening. There was a hornbill coming and given banana. The way it ate it was super cool. The staff were friendly and very informative. If you come to Sabah and happen to be around Sandakan, you should give it a go.
  • Those quirky monkeys seem to be not shy . But they are sad. Sad , because their natural environment was destroyed and replaced by palm plantation , where they live now. Additionally as foreign tourist you pay here 4 times more than Malaysian. I give 5 stars for monkeys, one star for this place.
  • They are amazing creatures. I was so excited to see them. But I'm very sad to realise that palms plantation kill their habitat.
  • Outstandng better that the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre. Better interaction with animals. Fed them, touched them Do not miss feeding times!
