Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary, Sandakan
(4/5 based on 700+ reviews on the web)
Visit the home of the island's most iconic natives at Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary. Founded in 1994 by a benevolent developer, the reserve protects around 60 of the seriously endangered primates, supplementing their diet and keeping track of their numbers. Visit the center at feeding time to watch the families of these pot-bellied, large-nosed monkeys emerge from the jungle, and take a walk across the reserve to observe them searching for food in their natural habitat. Put Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary and other Sandakan attractions into our Sandakan vacation route planner, and watch your holiday take shape.

  • Yes, there were lots of monkeys, and great photos were taken, but it all felt a bit like exploitation to me. The place is a dump, there is no effort to encourage the monkeys not to be so dependant on ...  more »
  • Such a pity they're endangered species. The sanctuary itself is really nice and an opportunity to see them so close is amazing but I feel so sad that it is in between of the disgusting palm trees. We ...  more »
  • Proboscis sanctuary. 60myr and 20myr each way from sandakan. It's really worth it. More than 60monkeys together. 2 platforms where they feed the monkeys.

  • Another great place to visit, truly awesome viewing area with an almost 360 degrees view of the habitat. The monkeys come up pretty close but we never felt threatened. A great experience for all.
  • This was absolutely the highlight of my trip to Sandakan. Unlike the orangutan centre, you get extremely close to the proboscis monkeys and silver leaf monkeys, which are very tame and very inquisitive about human visitors. Some of the young silver leaf monkeys were exceptionally beautiful, and I was reluctant to leave when my group finally had to move on. Cannot recommend highly enough!
  • Located within plantations, the road towards the monkey sanctuary is rocky. Different monkey species can be seen, but the proboscis monkey is the rather famous one for this location. Interestingly open for visitor to interact with the monkeys up close.
  • Rm15 for Malaysian. It's very far. Not to much tourist when i visited. Luckily, we were on time for the feeding time. Nothing to do, just watching those proboscis monkey to eat. Take some photos.
  • Enjoy the trip very much, upclose and personal with the proboscis monkey.... Terrifying and fun
