Penang, Penang Island

Penang Hill is a hill resort comprising a group of peaks on Penang Island, Malaysia. It is located in Air Itam, west of the city centre of George Town. Penang Hill is also known by the Malay name Bukit Bendera, which actually refers to Flagstaff Hill, the most developed peak.Penang Hill covers a number of hills, with the highest point at Western Hill which is 833m above sea level. The hill stands out prominently from the lowlands as a hilly and forested area. It was used as a retreat during the British colonial period, and is now a popular tourist destination in Penang. The top of the hill is accessible via the Penang Hill Railway from its base station at Jalan Bukit Bendera, Air Itam. To date, this funicular railway system is the only one of its kind in Malaysia, transporting over a million visitors to the peak of Penang Hill.HistoryCaptain Francis Light, founder of the colony in Penang, first plotted a horse track from the Penang Botanic Gardens waterfall up to the top of the hill in 1788. He cleared an area in order to grow strawberry, and it therefore became known as Strawberry Hill. Its official name however was Flagstaff Hill, which is still reflected in its name in Malay, Bukit Bendera (literally "Flag Hill"). The name was a reference to the flagstaff outside "Bel Retiro", which was the residence of the Governor of Penang built by Francis Light c. 1789. The area is however widely known as Penang Hill which is in fact a collective term covering a number of hills, and the other names such as Flagstaff Hill, Strawberry Hill are still used for specific peaks in the area. The hill became a cool retreat for the British colonists from the heat of the lowlands and threat of malaria, and many bungalows were built on the summit of Penang Hill for government servants and army. A Convalescent Bungalow was built in 1803.

  • Penang is an island landmark. The sights here you literally already at the first corner, because the entire city is a receptacle of a huge number of street art. On the walls of the streets depict various paintings made by street artists from around the world, in agreement with the authorities during the annual Festival of the arts. Besides paintings, there are the same and installations involving the surrounding two-and three-storey Asian urban. Museums here are also very much and every traveler can find yourself liking and batik Museum, and Museum of photography. I opened the card and was number zavorazhen Penang places you can go and be enriched culturally. It is literally a goldmine for the tourist who likes to visit such places. In Penang so many temples. The most magnificent among them-the highest bliss. Within its walls you can really feel like in the Heavenly Palace of the gods. And one of the strangest is the snake Temple, in which live live snakes, and once a year during the Buddhist festival many denizens of the jungle spolzajutsja there to celebrate it. Both temples are at some distance from Georgetown, but the city itself is literally littered with holy places of various denominations. Penang as little India because in the Georgetown is the eponymous district of the city, in which literally obustroilas' and living piece of India. On the streets of Little India you will find a variety of shops with Indian goods, as well as cafes and restaurants with delicious Indian cuisine. In the city centre there are numerous Hostels (35 ringit per night and more), striped off Cafe, in which almost every evening you can hear live music. Penang is an island on which want to return even after 20 or 30 years.

Where to stay in George Town

As an established tourist destination, George Town offers a range of options making use of the city's famous architectural diversity, with boutique hotels in the old town themed around the history of the building they occupy. For such singular accommodations, expect to pay a little more. Budget hotels and unbranded local options provide a comfortable night sleep at an affordable rate. The coastal areas offer more expensive resort-style luxury rooms with sea views, while away from the beaten track, you'll find backpacker hostels providing good options for those wanting to keep on the move.
