Niah National Park, Miri

4.4
Explore the vast underground chambers of Niah National Park, home to otherworldly rock formations, ancient cave paintings, and legions of swiftlets, the makers of solidified-saliva dwellings that often end up in bird's nest soups. Access the caves via a 3 km (1.9 mi) trek, doable without a guide. No special equipment is required here, but you can make your visit more enjoyable by wearing sturdy shoes, bringing plenty of water, and carrying your own flashlight to avoid paying for rental. Our Miri vacation planner makes visiting Niah National Park and other Miri attractions simple, and helps you make a travel plan personal to you.

  • Great place to go to if u working in Brunei and got nothing to do over the weekend.
  • Another great national park. No so "crowded" and big like Gunung Mulu but with huge caves and nice walks too. If you are not in hurry take it slow and stay over night in one of the bungalows provided. Great to listen to night sounds of the jungle instead of city noises.
  • IMPORTANT: A lot of reviews for the Niah Caves referenced the WRONG location! If you are looking for the direction to visit the Niah Caves, THIS IS the right location as the entrance to the caves are via the Niah National Park HQ. We visited both the main cave (the "West Cave") and the "Painted Caves" and the whole trip took us about 3.5 hours (leisurely stroll with lots of rests as I have my 10 years old son with me). If you wish to visit the Painted Caves, you will definitely need torchlighs as the passage from the main cave to Ban Gian and onwards to the Painted Caves are totally dark. If you only want to visit the main cave, there is no need for torchlights. The main cave is an amazing sight. The Painted Caves are definitely worth the extra 30-45 minutes walk (the route has a few steep ascents!) as you can still see the cave paintings done hundreds of years ago! Lastly please be reminded that the caves visiting hours are only until 3.00pm.

Where to stay in Miri

Long considered among the best places in Malaysia to meet others on their travels, Miri has a bounty of budget-friendly hostels and guesthouses. However, do your research before choosing your accommodations, as a lot of the options here cater to local oil rig workers and aren't exactly conducive to multicultural exchange. Many of the budget-friendly guesthouses or hostels cluster conveniently close to amenities such as restaurants and nighttime entertainment.
