  • Poh San Teng Temple, located at the foot of Bukit Cina (the biggest chinese cemetary in Malaysia) and next to HANG LI POH WELL or THE KING'S WELL. It was founded in 1795 by Kapitan China Chua Su Cheong as a graveyard temple, to allow the descendants of those buried on Bukit China to conduct prayers to their ancestors away from heavy rain and winds. The main deity is "Fu De Zheng Shen" or "Tua Pek Kong". It is the tradition of the Chinese in China as well as Malaysia to dedicate graveyard temples to Tua Pek Kong, a local Chinese God in control of the land and the wealth. The name of the temple, Poh San Teng, is inscribed on a 1795 tablet during its founding and is also above the front door of the temple. But many people prefer to call it Sam Po Keng, which is the nick name of the famous Chinese Admiral Cheng Ho (Zheng He). However, the history does not give us any clear information how this "mix up" happened. But from my experience it is easy to get confused about the names here with both Hokkien, Mandarin, Cantonese and English used by people. The temple has been upgraded after Cheng Hoon Teng got involved in the management and now offer more information about the temple and it's history. It's well worth a visit to find out more about Melakas 3rd oldest Taoist Temple

Where to stay in Melaka

Luxury hotels in opulent buildings frequently sit right alongside budget accommodations in Melaka. Side streets and alleyways offer secluded rooms in attractive buildings that are often as grandiose as regal hotels. For budget lodgings, look for the main arterial roads, which lack the charm of the rest of the town, but provide comfortable rooms at reduced rates.
