A Famosa Fort, Melaka

3.4
#5 of 16 in Historic Sites in Melaka
Visit the Portuguese fortress of A Famosa Fort to see one of the oldest surviving European architectural ruins in Southeast Asia. Constructed by the Portuguese Empire in 1511, the fort housed many of the town's Portuguese residents until the Dutch drove them out in 1641. The change of colonial hands remains visible above the entrance to the main gatehouse (the only surviving portion of the fort): note inscribed year 1670, along with a bas-relief logo of the Dutch East India Company. Unfortunately, when the British took control of the fort in the late 18th century, they demolished all but the main gatehouse. Walk among the ruins and stately trees and ponder the colonial contests that swept through the country over centuries. • The Porta de Santiago is one of the gates of the former A Famosa fortress. There’s a kink in the passage to slow down the advance of enemy troops and enclosed two sets of walls. Entrances on the side ...  more »
  • Down from St Paul's Cathedral, incidentally, came here. It is thought it is a bit more impressive because it had become a tourist attraction in Melaka, but smaller than imagined. But few people outside the cannon took photos of many, has been on the waiting list.

Don't worry about food and other stuff, there are also stalls and restaurants around. souvenirs are also there! shop what you what, enjoy as you pleased 😆. Hotels are not really far from there.
  • A must see place to visit, very well-preserved. You can wander around with no need of local guide. It is scorching hot, though. Well-prepare yourself with lots of water, hat, sunglasses, SPF.
  • Love the view & history, well preserved and maintained heritage. This place is fun to be at night too. Colourful & attractive trishaws await to bring you around for a short tour. Your kids will surely love it too! You can rent a bike, roller blade, scooter etc. Well done state government!
  • Must.see for everyone who visits Malacca. Wear light cotton long.sleeved and a wide.brimmed hat. Bring water too. It's.really hot walk.up the hill.
  • It is a small gate house and the only remaining part of the fortress that used to surround the St. Paul's Hill. It was built by the Portuguese in 1512, making it one of the oldest surviving colonial architectural remains in South East Asia. During the British colonial period, the fortress was almost entirely demolished, only to be stopped by Sir Stamford Raffles and Lord Minto, saving the small gate house that we see today. Today, other than the gate house, we could also see several replicas of the old fortress cannons around it.

Where to stay in Melaka

Luxury hotels in opulent buildings frequently sit right alongside budget accommodations in Melaka. Side streets and alleyways offer secluded rooms in attractive buildings that are often as grandiose as regal hotels. For budget lodgings, look for the main arterial roads, which lack the charm of the rest of the town, but provide comfortable rooms at reduced rates.
