A Famosa Fort, Melaka

(460+ reviews on the web)
Historic Site
Visit the Portuguese fortress of A Famosa Fort to see one of the oldest surviving European architectural ruins in Southeast Asia. Constructed by the Portuguese Empire in 1511, the fort housed many of the town's Portuguese residents until the Dutch drove them out in 1641. The change of colonial hands remains visible above the entrance to the main gatehouse (the only surviving portion of the fort): note inscribed year 1670, along with a bas-relief logo of the Dutch East India Company. Unfortunately, when the British took control of the fort in the late 18th century, they demolished all but the main gatehouse. Walk among the ruins and stately trees and ponder the colonial contests that swept through the country over centuries. • Love the view & history, well preserved and maintained heritage. This place is fun to be at night too. Colourful & attractive trishaws await to bring you around for a short tour. Your kids will surely love it too! You can rent a bike, roller blade, scooter etc. Well done state government!
  • Probably the most popular symbol of Melaka. The remains of the fort itself doesn't seem very amazing, just a small gate like structure, what's left of the actual fort itself. When visiting Melaka, one has to take a photo with the A Famosa. When we were here, there were some street musicians singing from within the area. From the back of the fort, climb up to St Paul's Hill.
  • Malacca's best known sightseeing spot, one of the oldest surviving European architectural remains in Asia and located downhill from St. Paul's church, I was trilled and excited standing among the many to see Porta De Santiago- th small gate. Being here gives you a nice feeling of knowing about the yesterday's history of Malacca. Must see if you are holidaying in Malacca.
