Old museum with many stuffed animals, items from a long house, tools, baskets etc. A new museum is being built down the hill and it is very well curated and informative,  more »

The display of stuffed animals was depressing and unworthy given the background story of Alfred Wallace who collected wildlife from the Malaysian Archipelago and generated his own theory of evolution....  more »

The museum is right in the city centre. If you are first time to Sarawak, this is the perfect place to learn about the rich history of Sarawak from the era of Brunei's rule and subsequent Brooke's rule (AKA the white rajahs). Also in display is the stories of diverse tribal groups. The monolith outside the stadium is one of its kind in Sarawak featuring local tribal design.

Cultural and natural museum, not the newest collection, may specimens were probably stuffed and mounted 75 years, ago (some may even be extinct), but it does a good job of explaining things. The cultural portion is actually quite good explaining the history and beliefs of the local people as well as Sarawak's journey from tribal island to nation and eventually state.

A must go whenever I'm at Kuching. Fabulous preserved animals and information on the natives. There's a mini zoo nearby as well as a comfty cafe where you could enjoy local delicacies

My children love going to the museum because they learn many historical facts about Sarawak. Personally I enjoyed the animal section and the History of the Local people. Didn't know that once upon a time Batu Lintang was a Japanese prisoners' camp.

A lot of money spent on their new showcase, which is well done. However, the original museum building and its contents badly needs maintenance. Air conditioning does not work in the main museum.

Where to stay in Kuching

The most popular area to stay in Kuching remains just south of the Sarawak River, where you can find affordable hotels offering basic but comfortable rooms. South of Jalan Main Bazaar, budget backpacker accommodations in the form of hostels and guesthouses draw many visitors with limited means. Consider the districts north of the river for more exclusive and resort-style alternatives.
