Kuching Esplanade, Kuching

4.1
#2 of 15 in Sightseeing in Kuching
Landmark Tourist Spot
Take a peaceful stroll along Kuching Esplanade, a neatly decorated promenade. Lined with colonial era buildings, the esplanade brings the town and the water together in a walkway dotted with many ornamental features. Notice the traditional mosaics along the pathway, representing Malaysian themes through intricate patterns. Vendors set up here throughout the day, so grab some authentic street food as you pass, and head to the main bazaar at the end of the path for a bustling, traditional shopping experience. For travelers who use our custom trip planner, Kuching holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Kuching Esplanade and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • A cosy spot to stroll:) There are eateries, souvenirs and street musicians who show their performance. The great thing is that locals come here that will make you feel no tourist. The people here walk around greeting you and try to make a chat with you. Really very nice and fun.

  • Our hotel was next to the waterfront so we walked along it many times during a three week visit to Kuching. It always appeared clean and welcoming at any time of day and night. At night it is bustling...  more »

  • Serene, calm, and peaceful! A place that you would like to walk during sunset. For tourist, this is the most convenience place to find a souvenir to take home.
  • Good place for take some rest. It'll be nice in night, you can find many activities in night. Start from street musical show, street food, souvenirs, etc
  • Nice place to sit and relax. Take a little ferry boat across the river to Fort Margarita.
  • If you are in short trip, this is a must visit spot. Great view of Sarawak State Parliment and Fort Margherita. Best time of visit is on weekend evening around 6pm as you can have day and night view of riverside, plus the water fountains with lighting. If you are keen on souvenirs, just go to the opposite side along the main bazaar road where there are a lot of souvenir shop with fair price, even cheaper than Sirikin Market at Indon border. Waste no time, just come here and you will get what you want. Btw those shops are operate before 7pm, so do come earlier. Along the esplanade, some local snacks, street performers and life band on weekend, pay attention to a layer cake stall as they sell FRESH layer cake, you can watch how they cut and you can enjoy the FREE tester(a good after dinner dessert), the choice of layer cake will blow your mind. If you want to find BEST layer cake, this is the best you can find in Kuching. If you going for boat ride, try the boat which they fetch locals instead of fancy tourist boat as this will save your pocket and serve the same purpose in my personal opinion.
  • A brisk walk along the river around 6pm allows you to enjoy one of the most beautiful sunsets in Sarawak!

Where to stay in Kuching

The most popular area to stay in Kuching remains just south of the Sarawak River, where you can find affordable hotels offering basic but comfortable rooms. South of Jalan Main Bazaar, budget backpacker accommodations in the form of hostels and guesthouses draw many visitors with limited means. Consider the districts north of the river for more exclusive and resort-style alternatives.
