National Museum, Kuala Lumpur

3.7
#3 of 17 in Museums in Kuala Lumpur
National Museum narrates the history of Malaysia from prehistoric times, through the rise of the Islamic kingdoms, colonialism, and into the modern era. A mixture of dioramas and historical artifacts bring the past to life. The surprisingly compact and well-laid out museum includes an outdoor section containing traditional houses, ancient burial poles, a steam train engine, and more. The museum complex also encompasses ethnology and craft museums, both of which deserve a visit. Nice Malaysian history museum. 4 rooms are divided by era. Nothing special but interesting and one of the few museums to see in KL beyond the usual shopping malls.

Very well presented historically themed museum with associated museums nearby in the same grounds. This museum on the whole attempts to just stick to the facts and present in an interesting format. It is not perfect at avoiding national pride and prejudice but is far better than some other ASEAN "museums" that are more like propaganda centres than areas of scientific and historical knowledge. This one is inexpensive and worth the trip.

Galleries A & B are truly outstanding. They've been really improved on and I was pleasantly surprised on my visit. Galleries C & D could still be improved on.

Interesting history, not overwhelming. Particularly good displays of prehistoric human habitation and technology. . Excellent local cultural history including architecture, arms and armour, and ceremonial wares.Colonial era agriculture and mining also good displays.

It has detailed and interesting history of Malaysia from hundreds of thousands of years till present. However it is really a small place with limited exhibits. Nothing spectacular but it is worth going at least once to appreciate history of Malaysia.
