Penang Botanical Gardens, George Town

3.7
#3 of 22 in Parks in Penang Island
Stroll around the city's "green lung" at Penang Botanical Gardens. Established by the British on the site of an old granite quarry in 1884, the public gardens stretch out across 29 hectares (72 acres). Amble across the scenery to find the famous trees that live here, many with evocative nicknames like "the five o'clock tree" (its buds close just before dark). If you need a little exercise during your trip, come here for a jog, jungle trekking, or aerobics. Spot the many animals that call the park home, with long-tailed macaques, dusky leaf monkeys, and black giant squirrels among the favorites. Penang Botanical Gardens is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our international travel planner, George Town Edition.

  • A nice place for healthy activities such as jogging, taichi, recreation activities and so on. Fantastic if you love greens and love knowing them. Just beware of the monkeys tho 😂
  • A nice place to relax. There are transport available to fetch you for a tour around the garden. The Lily pond have no Lily, wondering whether I come to the correct area or not.
  • Good weather but seems a lot of renovation happening.... Hope it is for the greater good.... Main enterance giant tree was cut down not sure why but 1 iconic landmark that greeted me since I was small is no more!!!
  • Beautiful views; a great place for a relaxing stroll. There are monkeys everywhere that love to follow you around. For Pokemon Go players: lots of pokestops and two gyms.
  • Great place to hangout with your friends and family or to do hiking, taking pictures and stuff. Make sure you reach early to enjoy it to the fullest. Carry water with you and DONT FEED THE MONKEYS..

Where to stay in George Town

As an established tourist destination, George Town offers a range of options making use of the city's famous architectural diversity, with boutique hotels in the old town themed around the history of the building they occupy. For such singular accommodations, expect to pay a little more. Budget hotels and unbranded local options provide a comfortable night sleep at an affordable rate. The coastal areas offer more expensive resort-style luxury rooms with sea views, while away from the beaten track, you'll find backpacker hostels providing good options for those wanting to keep on the move.
