Penang Botanical Gardens, George Town

(1,000+ reviews on the web)
Garden Nature / Park
Stroll around the city's "green lung" at Penang Botanical Gardens. Established by the British on the site of an old granite quarry in 1884, the public gardens stretch out across 29 hectares (72 acres). Amble across the scenery to find the famous trees that live here, many with evocative nicknames like "the five o'clock tree" (its buds close just before dark). If you need a little exercise during your trip, come here for a jog, jungle trekking, or aerobics. Spot the many animals that call the park home, with long-tailed macaques, dusky leaf monkeys, and black giant squirrels among the favorites. • One loop is about 2.5km and a great place to spent the evening or morning with the family. Most arbotoriums are closed on Monday. So visit on Tuesday to Sunday allows you better opportunity to visit the like or Orchid, cactus, ferns... You can hike up Penang Hill which is 5km one way!
  • Well kept park. A little sad some parts of it are closed. And the parts that are meant to be open at a certain time, also remain closed! Monkeys are on the outside, they used to roam more freely I recall. Overall though, still a well kept green lung in the city
  • Awesome place. Full of greenary. Jogging tracks in lush greenary. Many small bridges along a small flowing river.
  • Best place for running and relaxing in green area of Penang. Clean, quiet, peaceful. Lots of benches to rest in the shadow. Clean public toilet is also convenient. You can meet monkeys near the entrance. And be ready to hike up to Penang hill - worth doing it!
  • Great place to connect with nature and nice hike to Penang hill from here, take a lot of water with you and beware of the monkeys.
