Penang Botanical Gardens, George Town

3.8
#3 of 14 in Parks in Penang Island
Garden Nature / Park
Stroll around the city's "green lung" at Penang Botanical Gardens. Established by the British on the site of an old granite quarry in 1884, the public gardens stretch out across 29 hectares (72 acres). Amble across the scenery to find the famous trees that live here, many with evocative nicknames like "the five o'clock tree" (its buds close just before dark). If you need a little exercise during your trip, come here for a jog, jungle trekking, or aerobics. Spot the many animals that call the park home, with long-tailed macaques, dusky leaf monkeys, and black giant squirrels among the favorites. • You can spend a very pleasant few hours strolling round this place. Fortunately I read some reviews and was advised that some of the areas were closed on Mondays.  more »
  • Unfortunately, this botanical garden is not properly maintained. Whilst it is still a nice place to visit if you need to get away from the hustle of Penang island, there is a lot that could be done to...  more »

  • Absolutely beautiful gardens, well maintained, so much to see, so much to do. Great for a picnic, an easy walk through the park, mountain biking or even some heavy trekking. Great photo opportunities here. Lots of cute monkeys. Only downside ~ people have taught the monkeys that it is okay to take food from them so they can get a little aggressive.
  • Saw the bushy leaf monkey, longtailed macaques, and turtles here. The gardens themselves are nice, but they are locked away so the public can only see the plants through fences, such as the cacti pictured. Most locals use this place as a beautiful place to exercise, and that's about it. The map provided is not the best and not very English friendly brochures.
  • It is a beautiful park. Really stunning vegetation. Watch out for the monkeys they stole a cereal bar from our bagpack. Only four stars because it is a bit far away from the city.
  • Good place to exercise and relax. Unfortunately always no parking lot always full parking. And there is too many Monkey here and dangerous as the monkey is always hungry looking for food. Please do not feed the monkey!
  • Nice place to rest and relax. The air is clean and the place is tidy. You can go alone or with family.

Where to stay in George Town

As an established tourist destination, George Town offers a range of options making use of the city's famous architectural diversity, with boutique hotels in the old town themed around the history of the building they occupy. For such singular accommodations, expect to pay a little more. Budget hotels and unbranded local options provide a comfortable night sleep at an affordable rate. The coastal areas offer more expensive resort-style luxury rooms with sea views, while away from the beaten track, you'll find backpacker hostels providing good options for those wanting to keep on the move.
