Khoo Kongsi, George Town

(4.1/5 based on 1,200+ reviews on the web)
Enjoy the ornamental architecture of Khoo Kongsi, a Chinese clanhouse in George Town's World Heritage-listed area. The Khoo Kongsi clan of wealthy Chinese traders constructed the complex in stages beginning in the 17th century. Today the complex features an ornate and elaborate association building, a traditional theater, and late 19th-century rowhouses. The protected buildings represent good examples of Chinese design, and guided tours elucidate the culture of the clan, their influence on the area, and the history of the clanhouse itself. Using our international travel planner, George Town attractions like Khoo Kongsi can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

  • This temple is definitely worth the visit. Admission is paying MYR 10 per person. It was built by wealthy merchants of the Khoo clan. The original was demolished from the same clan, then rebuilt but it was destroyed in a fire and the last temple rebuilt in the current splendor. There are sculptures, wood carvings and ornate ceilings, at the entrance there are statues of soldiers, there are pillars in Dragon. Beautiful!

  • One of the clan houses. The most extraordinary we saw. In the back the paintings are fabulous, but the whole spirit of the house is unmissable.  more »
  • One really should have an audio guide. The history of the clan and the existing complex is truly interesting. Well worth the visit.  more »

  • Absolutely jaw dropping gorgeously well maintained Chinese clan temple, more ornate than even a taoist temple. Come to look at all the finely crafted and gilded door frames, beans and wall mutual. We're talking about it's almost resemble a royal palace here !
  • fake place !!! This is most terrible attraction in Penang The seller ticket not told me that still fixing or repairing now . So sad , I feel dissappointed very much Only RM 10 , Why do you cheat?
  • While not very big, the clan house is simply wonderful thanks to the excellent restauration job and the enormous amount of details to watch out for. Best 10 RM spent so far :) !
  • A must visit for tourists visiting Penang. Great architecture and there is a museum/exhibit inside the clanhouse as well. Free access for those who bear the last name "Khoo"
  • Elaborate and definitely worth the time spent. You'll take a couple of hours to truly appreciate the history that are engraved on the walls and carvings on the buildings. There's a light up for every last Saturday of the month. Perfect evening to be spent here listening to operas and enjoying the light up.
