Khoo Kongsi, George Town

4.1
Enjoy the ornamental architecture of Khoo Kongsi, a Chinese clanhouse in George Town's World Heritage-listed area. The Khoo Kongsi clan of wealthy Chinese traders constructed the complex in stages beginning in the 17th century. Today the complex features an ornate and elaborate association building, a traditional theater, and late 19th-century rowhouses. The protected buildings represent good examples of Chinese design, and guided tours elucidate the culture of the clan, their influence on the area, and the history of the clanhouse itself. • Well known Khoo Kongsi was not easy to find. Hidden in between houses and suddenly you spotted it while strolling along the streets.  more »
  • Saw the huge Yuan Yi Ma, too bad cant go up the highest level to feel the status. Too commercialism, selling all kinds of stuff at the temple.  more »
  • Near the ice ball? Of the regretted if admission on the set of the earphone getting admission and explanation to the shop rental if more details are known good, with only the Visual look and luxury.

  • Came from KL to Penang and wanted to see what the city had to offer. The Khoo Kongsi is full of history that brings light to the understanding of the cultural melting pot that is Malaysia. The lovely owners of the shop enlightened us to the free puppet show that was happening the next evening. We came back to the awe inducing spectacle of lights that brilliantly displays the intricate architecture. Its quite the sight. The puppet show was both emotional and inspiring, and free for crying out loud. A true treasure.
  • Well kept historical building great for wonderful photography moment. It has an open space in the middle of the premise with stage available and it can be rented for special occasion. Street food hawkers can be called in for special catering services. It's a pity that the washroom were not taken care very well where you will find the flusher either failed to function or it's at a very unhygienic condition.
  • It's been many years since my last visit and I must say the upkeep has made the architecture so beautiful. There's a museum on the Khoo clan history. The museum was interesting however it would have been better if air-conditioning was installed instead of fans only. An entry fee of RM10 for adult charged to enter this site.
  • You really need to pay additional attention to the gallery downstairs where details of the building are describe in detail. Also speak to the operator of the gift shop in the kongsi to get insights. Should spend lots of time if you are from the Khoo clan. But even if you are not from the Khoo clan, you can appreciate how the architecture design that Incorporated safety and functional in one. There's no other architecture design in Penang that beats it. Must visit. If you are a Khoo clan, you and your family can go in for free. Else it is RM 10 per head, RM 1 for the kids.
  • A good place with rich history of its own.. A well maintained place with a mini interactive museum. Entrance fee for just RM10 and RM1 (For students) which is a great saving for all
