Khoo Kongsi, George Town

#2 of 21 in Museums in George Town
Specialty Museum Museum
Enjoy the ornamental architecture of Khoo Kongsi, a Chinese clanhouse in George Town's World Heritage-listed area. The Khoo Kongsi clan of wealthy Chinese traders constructed the complex in stages beginning in the 17th century. Today the complex features an ornate and elaborate association building, a traditional theater, and late 19th-century rowhouses. The protected buildings represent good examples of Chinese design, and guided tours elucidate the culture of the clan, their influence on the area, and the history of the clanhouse itself. • Arrive before 17: 00. Easy to do when we survey the historic center. At the bottom of a court. Take the time to admire the murals, the frame and sculpted walls. Allow 30 minutes. Under the temple space where you will find a poster of the temple at night. Magical...

  • The entrance fee if RM10 is worth every amount spent if u ask me. Besides the temple, there is a gallery which tells you the history of the place, even have a small dining area with wax figurines. A good place for selfies / wefies. The traditional ice cream stick at RM1 found at the shop is worth trying too. (I tried the lemon flavour-refreshing for the hot weather!)
  • Beautiful place where at the last weekend every month you can watch amazing cultural events with traditional music and dances.
  • Rich stories of the family history told by a friendly guide. Entrance fees were definitely worth it.
  • Free entrance end of every month. Catch the gorgeous performances and admire the engravings of the building when the light comes into action
  • Not busy. You can explore the place and admire the craftsmanship at ease. Entrance fee is nominal. Surely worth visit.

Where to stay in George Town

As an established tourist destination, George Town offers a range of options making use of the city's famous architectural diversity, with boutique hotels in the old town themed around the history of the building they occupy. For such singular accommodations, expect to pay a little more. Budget hotels and unbranded local options provide a comfortable night sleep at an affordable rate. The coastal areas offer more expensive resort-style luxury rooms with sea views, while away from the beaten track, you'll find backpacker hostels providing good options for those wanting to keep on the move.
