Dharmikarama Burmese Temple, George Town

4.4
#4 of 20 in Historic Sites in George Town
Religious Site Tourist Spot
Admire the monumental architecture and calming interior of a long-established Buddhist place of worship at Dharmikarama Burmese Temple. Founded in 1803 by a wealthy member of the city's Bamar community, the building represents the only Burmese Buddhist temple outside Myanmar. Its particularly colorful and ornate exterior, conical tower, and square main hall distinguish it from other Buddhist temples in the country. Beyond its religious significance, it stands as a testament to a community. Learn the history of Malaysia's Burmese population from the set of information panels positioned throughout the temple grounds. Put Dharmikarama Burmese Temple at the forefront of your travel plans using our George Town vacation builder.

  • Beautiful carvings and architecture. The garden is pleasant to wander around. Worth a visit if visiting the Reclining Bhudda temple across the road
  • I have already forgotten that Burmesse temples are so different from Thai. This is a nice reminder.
  • Nice Temple in Burmese style. Worth visiting if only for the beautiful pictures, Burmese architecture and statues. I wish they had a restaurant as well.
  • This is a fascinating place. It stands opposite to the reclining Buddha temple. It was of course peaceful. There are a few buildings inside and several sculptures depicting scenes and characters from Buddhism. It took me more time than I had planned for and was worth it.
  • This temple is fairly large in terms of area compared to wat chayamangkalaram. A great place with piece of mind. Treat to watch. Recommended!
