Dharmikarama Burmese Temple, George Town

Admire the monumental architecture and calming interior of a long-established Buddhist place of worship at Dharmikarama Burmese Temple. Founded in 1803 by a wealthy member of the city's Bamar community, the building represents the only Burmese Buddhist temple outside Myanmar. Its particularly colorful and ornate exterior, conical tower, and square main hall distinguish it from other Buddhist temples in the country. Beyond its religious significance, it stands as a testament to a community. Learn the history of Malaysia's Burmese population from the set of information panels positioned throughout the temple grounds. • Serene and tranquil. Look for the tortoises who are astonishing good at pretending to be statues. Darn things made me jump when they moved!
  • Heritage and historic. Would be nice if someone could walk you through the history and the symbolic meanings of the architecture, arts and motives
  • Dhammikarama Burmese Temple, located at the Pulau Tikus suburb in George Town, is one of the most popular tourist attractions. Built in year 1803, it is the oldest Buddhist temple on Penang Island. With the vast temple land area, we have seen new buildings being added over the years. Walking around the temple, checking out the kitchen and the Vimal Dining Hall, you will feel that the Burmese community is so lively here.
  • Interesting Temple with lots of art. The grounds are quite beautiful, and you can enjoy at a leisurely places there are not too many tourists. It is nice to walk around and look at the different motives around the temple. As previously mentioned there are a lot of burgers as you walk in to the temple. They have a nice turtle pond and a Wishing well.
  • Dharmikarama Burmese Temple is the only Burmese Buddhist temple outside Myanmar. Located in Georgetown Penang, it stands opposite Wat Chayamangkalaram Temple, with a pair of large stone elephants flanking the front gates. Inside the pagoda grounds is a Boddhi tree, a wishing pond and apartments for monks. Devotees have contributed many statues of Buddha, so his serene-faced image can be found at almost every corner in different meditation poses. The walkways have a series of panels with beautiful murals depicting scenes of the journey of Prince Siddharta (dressed in typical Burmese fashion) achieving Nirvana and becoming Buddha.
