Where to stay in George Town

As an established tourist destination, George Town offers a range of options making use of the city's famous architectural diversity, with boutique hotels in the old town themed around the history of the building they occupy. For such singular accommodations, expect to pay a little more. Budget hotels and unbranded local options provide a comfortable night sleep at an affordable rate. The coastal areas offer more expensive resort-style luxury rooms with sea views, while away from the beaten track, you'll find backpacker hostels providing good options for those wanting to keep on the move.

  • Beautifully restored Chinese clan building. The famous 'cat marriage' wall mural is here.
  • Beautiful, easily accessed for a quick tour, some good explanations on posters which is appreciated.
  • One of the most beautiful and breathtaking Chinese architecture in Penang, the temple is just spectacular and well crafted. Another prime example illustrating the legacy of those successful overseas Chinese. The clan temple belongs to the Cheah family (谢, Xie) which were one of the most prominent Chinese clans in North Malaysia, well representing in political and business sectors. Other important clans were the Khoos (邱), Lims (林) and Yeohs (杨) Famous Cheah people from Penang include Cheah Tek Soon (谢德顺), Cheah Hun Yam (谢寒掩), Cheah Seng Kim (谢成金) and Cheah Choo Yew (谢自友). All were prominent and successful merchants, political figures and community leaders
