Fairy Caves, Bau

4.2
#2 of 23 in Nature in Sarawak
Must see · Cave · Nature / Park
To enter the spooky underground world of Fairy Caves you have to navigate a cramped passage and climb some steep stairs. Once inside, look for interesting rock formations, including one that resembles a human throat and uvula, and another that looks like a statue of Quanyin, the goddess of mercy. A thin layer of plants--fed by the guano-enriched soil--clings to the wall of the cavern, creating an unusual look rarely seen in other caves. The makers of the guano hang from the ceiling and flit about the cave. Take a look at our Bau trip itinerary planning website to schedule your visit to Fairy Caves and learn about what else to see and do during your holiday.

  • Wow! These caves are fantastic. They are truly worth a visit. Visitors be warned--there are steep, slippery stairways. Inside the cave it is quite a long climb up.
  • Amazing cave, has a huge gallery which gets enough sunlight, therefore unusually lush and green for a cave. Also great acoustics for aspiring singers :) Wear good shoes and be ready for some steps, otherwise shouldn't be a problem for whole family.
  • It is about an hour or so drive from Kuching town. Easily accessible cave just have to climb up a few flights of steps. We have gotten a local tour guide to take us in and he was quite helpful and knowledgeable.
  • Beautiful caves. Don’t be foolish though if you get deep enough in and the stairs are broken and you can’t see warning signs it is your own fault. Don’t be one of those people in flip flops with a 10 ringgit torch about to step off a ledge. Come prepared for the worst with sturdy boots, strong torch and first aide kit. In Borneo always assume the worst can happen and be prepared for it. Of course it probably never will but you never know. It is amazing how much of a boost it is to know you can take care of yourself or others for a day or two unassisted .
  • So cool. only came here because I missed the bus to the orangutan center but was pleasantly surprised! A little hard to get to but so worth it. Combined with wind cave but this one was my favorite. Just very unique!
