Palace of the Grand Dukes (Palais Grand-Ducal), Luxembourg City

3.9
#5 of 13 in Historic Sites in Luxembourg City
Palace of the Grand Dukes (Palais Grand-Ducal) features one of the most impressive facades in the city. Built as a city hall during the Flemish Renaissance, the palace suffered greatly during World War II--the Nazis destroyed much of the original furniture and decor and used the building as a tavern. Today, the grand interior is open for tours, but only during the summer. Check the website for dates and times. • We have never visited the Interior, but in summer there are guided tours. Already the outside is beautiful and very well maintained.

  • Nice palace but didn’t get a chance to get inside. Building is nice but doesn’t deserve five stars. It is in a really nice area that offer many other attractions. There are also stores around to buy books or souvenirs. Highly recommended!
  • Couldn't get in even though we queued at the entrance for ages. When we got to the top, we were told go elsewhere for tickets. No directions given. No signage. Then when we got to ticket office,no tickets. Disappointing.
  • Nice peaceful place to walk around with shops and cafes around.
  • You can watch the guards changing with the live band. It's pretty interesting and not that crowded.
  • It was a nice day to walk around the City. With alot of construction around the street sometime made it very difficults for walking. So, becareful when walking around the pavers stone. But the exteriors of the Palais is quit amazing.

Where to stay in Luxembourg City

With 24 districts making up Luxembourg City, you might have a hard time choosing what neighborhood you like best. For starters, look at accommodations in Ville Haute, the medieval center, where you’ll be at the heart of the city and within walking distance to main attractions as well as public transportation. If stunning views are what you’re after, look into Ville Basse, a central neighborhood in the city’s gorge. Gare is also well-located, home to the city’s main train station as well as many lively restaurants and cafes filled with locals. Whether you stay in one of the city’s few hostels or a hotel, be prepared for high prices.
