Luxembourg City History Museum, Luxembourg City

(4.1/5 based on 200+ reviews on the web)
Luxembourg City History Museum brings together the city's history and its future by building a modern museum inside of four restored historical houses. Beneath the street level, the permanent exhibit of the city's architectural and urban development is displayed chronologically. The upper floors host temporary exhibits with urban themes. Multimedia displays throughout the museum help you understand the cultural, political, and social changes in the city. These are enhanced by 60 different audiovisual elements that bring history back to life. Finally, view the city itself, riding in the elevator inside a floating glass section of the museum. The glass carriage gives you a view of the Grund district and the Rham plateau, as well as all the museum's floors. Visit the vaulted cellars beneath the city museum that were discovered 1990s for an extra treat. A Luxembourg City card gets you admission to the museum, but you can also buy a ticket on arrival. • This is a nice Museum and well maintained, split level, requiring a visit of an hour or less. I must say that, while admiring the refined setting and "soft", I wasn't particularly impressed. Let's say the Roman mosaic is perhaps the most valuable piece and admired, but otherwise, I found it absolutely normal.

  • This museum is great! It explains the history of the old town from the legends of Melusina and Sigfried, the foundation of the fortress in 963 and it's evolution till nowadays! It has great maquettes ...  more »
  • This museum is a treat. First of all this beautiful façade protected by a glass wall that backs up the old buildings of the 17th century. Then you enter the Museum and go to the basement in a maze of galleries to the unusual atmosphere... eb starting with an exhibition on melusina that will enchant you. Then in the different rooms you retracerez the history of the city admiring the city-forterresse models. Climbing the floors, you will learn more about the history of the city until the impermanent expo of the upper floors. The highlight? the elevator panoramic 18 m2 that rises to the top of the building to offer a view on the Valley of grund and the plateau of Rham... This museum is undoubtedly the most beautiful city... not to be missed

  • Nice museum just close the Palais Gd.Ducal. Note : do not miss the main central elevator which I always found impressive in a such historic and rather small place.
  • The history is well organized, so it is possible to understand quickly why Luxembourg is a great country. The collection is similar to Drëi Eechelen museum - both museums complement each other.
  • Well-presented information. Engaging.
  • I found the design of the museum quite original. Loved the giant glass elevator!
  • Neat museum with a lot of information about the city. Well worth the pittance for entry.
