The Luxembourg American Cemetery and Memorial is located in Hamm, Luxembourg City, Luxembourg. The cemetery can be found 2.5 kilometers southwest of Findel Airport. It is administered by the American Battle Monuments Commission. Under a U.S.-Luxembourg treaty signed in 1951 the U.S. government was granted free use in perpetuity of the land covered by the cemetery, without taxation. The cemetery, which is in extent contains the remains of 5,076 American service members. On 22 occasions two brothers rest side-by-side in adjacent graves. Most of the interred died during the Battle of the Bulge which was fought nearby in winter 1944/1945. The 5,076 headstones are set in 9 plots of fine grass, lettered A to I. Separating the plots are two malls radiating from the memorial and two transverse paths. Two flagpoles overlook the graves area. Situated between the two flagpoles lies the grave of General George S. Patton. Not far from the cemetery entrance stands the white stone chapel, set on a wide circular platform surrounded by woods. It is embellished with sculpture in bronze and stone, a stained-glass window with the insignia of the five major U.S. commands that operated in the region, and a mosaic ceiling.German fallen from the same battle are buried in the Sandweiler German war cemetery, about 1.5 kilometres away. The design of the tombstones are dark stone crosses compared to white tombstones of the American cemetery.

  • Not really the largest u.s. Cemetery from the 2nd WED but very special. Tomb of Gen. Patton sober and even though something separate ("heads") however identical. Maintenance, however, is phenomenal, security, nowhere but only green moss or attack (in the middle of forest), grass without any weeds. Seems yesterday laid out and just brushed for the visit. Reverence and respect very sure, but war is not proper. Seems that they wish to preserve the memory and very clean.

  • My visit to this cemetery was a somber experience as one reflects on the sacrifice so few put forth for so many. The cemetery has maps that show the progress of the war. You can also see the grave of ...  more »

  • This is a cemetery where 5,075 service members lie in peace. It's also the resting place of George S. Patton Jr., General of the 3rd Army. The cemetery was established in 29 December 1944. A treaty signed in 1951 between the United States and Luxembourg allowed the U.S to use land for FREE for the cemetery. Visit the chapel if you get a moment while visiting. This is a place of silence and respect for those who lost their lives to save millions.
  • I had the opportunity to visit Luxembourg in 1992 while training in Heidelberg Germany after returning from Desert Storm with my unit of the Tennessee Army National Guard. This visit was the highlight of my military career. All The people I met still hold our military men and women in high regard. The cemetery was so beautiful.
  • Absolutely impressive, well preserved and mesmerizing cemetery. I would say, it is a must see spot in Luxembourg, guarantee to be touched deeply, in a way the cemetery honors, the sacrifice of life lived.
  • Beautiful cemetery. This place is sacred ground. These men sacrifice everything to fee others and fight evil. Don't miss the moving experience. General Patton rests here. It's free and the bathrooms are very nice
  • Absolutely immaculate every time I've been there. A truly awe-inspiring memorial to the sacrifices made by the US in WWII. If you can visit and not be deeply touched... you're probably not the sort of person I ever want to meet.
