Vilnius University, Vilnius
Categories: Tourist Spots, Educational Sites
Originally founded in 1579 by Jesuit monks, Vilnius University represents one of the oldest institutions of its kind in the region. Home to more than 20,000 students annually, the university bustles with activity; its network of buildings in the city center features several different architectural styles. You can visit the school and explore its urban campus, replete with richly decorated vaulted rooms and ornate statues, as well as the church of St. John, which you can climb for a panoramic view of the city. Join a guided tour, offered in English and several other languages, to learn more about the history of the university, the library, and its research. Don't miss stopping by the university bookstore, which, in addition to its host of college-themed souvenirs and books, is one of the most colorful and lavishly painted rooms in the city.
