Vilnius TV Tower, Vilnius

3.9
As the tallest building in the country, Vilnius TV Tower offers unrivaled views and holds a memorial for those who died in 1991 resisting Soviet troops. Standing more than 326 m (1,071 ft) tall (with its antenna included), the tower rises above Vilnius, forming a notable piece of its skyline. Ascend via elevator to the observation platform; from here you can enjoy a panoramic view of the city and its surroundings, or get a drink or bite to eat at the tower's cafe. The entire platform makes a complete revolution once every hour. Don't miss the museum on the ground floor, dedicated to the 14 Lithuanian civilians killed in their attempts to blockade Soviet forces in 1991 and defend their country's newly asserted independence. • Several years before Christmas, this tower was surrounded with light garlands, rising to a height of over 100 meters and therefore she was the tallest Christmas tree in the world.

  • بسم اللة الرحمن الرحیم The Vilnius TV Tower (Lithuanian: Vilniaus televizijos bokštas) is a 326.5 m (1,071 ft)tower in the Karoliniškės microdistrict of Vilnius, Lithuania. It is the tallest structure in Lithuania, and is occupied by the SC Lithuanian Radio and Television Centre (Lithuanian: AB Lietuvos radijo ir televizijos centras). Quick facts: Type, Location … Design and construction View from Vilnius TV tower The tower was designed by V. Obydovas and the engineering section by K. Balėnas. The construction of the tower started on 31 May 1974 and finished on December 30, 1980. The construction was funded by the 11th Five Year Plan of the Soviet Union, which had earmarked funds for strategic investment in the then Lithuanian SSR. The weight of the whole structure is estimated at 25,000 to 30,000 metric tons (55,000,000–66,000,000 lb). The structure is composed of a concrete base, a 190 m (623 ft) long hollow reinforced concrete pipe, a reinforced concrete saucer, and a 136 m (446 ft) long steel spike. Radio transmitters are housed in the lower part of the concrete tower with antennas attached to the steel spike. The observation deck 165 m (541 ft) from the ground houses the cafe "Paukščių takas" (English: Milky Way), offers a picturesque view of the city and its surroundings, and sports a rotating platform that revolves once every 45 minutes. High-speed elevators reach the cafe from ground level in 40 seconds. On clear days, visibility can extend as far as Elektrėnai, a city approximately 40 km (25 mi) west, where power plants produced much of the electricity for Vilnius in Soviet times. Museum The TV tower played a major role in the events of 13 January 1991, when 14 unarmed civilians lost their lives and 700 were injured opposing the Soviet military seizure of the tower. A small museum dedicated to the January 1991 battle is housed on the ground floor, and various markers in the surrounding area indicate places where Lithuanian citizens died while trying to maintain the blockade against Soviet troops.
  • We eat at the restaurant. The tables rotate so that you can enjoy the view at 360° during your lunch. If the sky is clear, you can see very far and it certainly add some atmosphere! The food is fresh and good, well presented and tasty. The service is fast and efficient. All in all very recommended for something different than the usual restaurant. Five stars!
  • It's a symbol of Lithuania's fight for freedom. The people that sacrificed their lives, by a peaceful protest, to make sure the country achieves full freedom is an outstanding effort, definitely recommend visiting for the history and also the great view of the whole city from a high vantage point.
  • Excellent views but the accessible area of the tower is basically just a revolving restaurant. Unlike Tallinn's TV tower there is very little to do/experience once you've enjoyed the views. Prices in the restaurant are a little higher than you'd expect (€8 for a burger) and there was a 35 minute wait for our food to be served. That said it was hot and tasty once it arrived
  • Cool place to visit. You get great views of the city. Make sure you go on a nice clear and sunny day.
