Gates of Dawn, Vilnius
(4.3/5 based on 800+ reviews on the web)
The sole surviving example of the five gates that once ringed and protected Vilnius, Gates of Dawn represents the site of a Renaissance chapel and one of the main entrances to the historical city center. Originally built during the first two decades of the 16th century, the gates from outside the defensive city walls appear as an imposing and solidly built tower. On the reverse side, however, the gate frames an ornate church straddling the tunnel. Peer through the windows to catch a glimpse of the chapel within. Climb up to the chapel via the door located next to the gate to view an intimate prayer room complete with a gilded icon of the Virgin Mary, meant to bless visitors and travelers alike. Take note that Mary is depicted alone, rather than holding Jesus. Using our custom trip planner, Vilnius attractions like Gates of Dawn can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

  • Arriving at the door of the Aurora, is a curious image that you find on the top of the arc of a Virgin and catches your attention. To visit the Chapel is entered by a side door. It is small but called the gathering together, especially if you're Catholic. It is worth climbing.

  • Come to this place to view 16-century gate, remaining from the ramparts. But it turned out that in addition to externally and produce much of the gate is the gate Chapel (entrance on the left side, before reaching 100 m before the gate). And here in this Chapel is very remarkable and miraculous icon of the mother of God of Ostraya Brama (or Vilnius Madonna) 17-th century. The chapel room very small and filled with praying on his knees. Some of the pilgrims climb the pretty kurutoj stone staircase, too, on his knees, praying. In General, you can squeeze a cistern-cistern inside and something to consider. Recommend, although such serious religious ground idle tourist curiosity be somehow uncomfortable.

  • The mass of pilgrims and tourists almost push that though for a moment to see the miraculous image. In this company of little is sacred, unfortunately. And around a lot of chinśkich, shoddy souvenirs with the gate in the background. Some can be discouraged.

  • Beautiful gates with really exciting historical value. You can see lots of hearts and writings on them, also some people visit this place to ask for true love or to have children. There is shop in which you can get icons, crosses and souvenirs
  • The chapel is small but very impressive. The church was also nice and can easily be missed. The building is a bit of a maze!
  • On the top of gate, will see something detail inside. See more fancy when pass through the gate, restaurants, churchs and landmarks. It's really cold, 4 degree, now.
  • Very beautiful historic place to visit. Especially for Christians.
  • A very popular place in Vilnius you have to visit. From outside you can see a beautiful room inside the Gates of Dawn.
