Cathedral (Arkikatedra Bazilika), Vilnius

4.4
Cathedral (Arkikatedra Bazilika) represents the center of Catholic faith in Lithuania and serves as one of Vilnius' most notable buildings, particularly since it is also the resting place of the country's patron saint, St. Casimir. Built in 1783, the cathedral underwent a period of renewal after Lithuania's independence and nowadays has been restored to its former glory. Its entrance, complete with massive columns, statues, and a tower, dominates the surrounding square. Explore the cavernous interior of the church, decorated with carved-stonework ceilings, moldings, and murals. View the metal tomb of St. Casimir, one of the centerpieces of the structure. Don't miss the chance to visit the underground chapels, dedicated to different figures and a site of worship dating back further than the building itself. Here you have the opportunity to see the oldest surviving fresco in Lithuania. Make Cathedral (Arkikatedra Bazilika) part of your personalized Vilnius itinerary using our Vilnius trip website .

Is the building I love most of Vilnius. Belle Toujours, both with snow with sole...ma when the sky is blue, that white shines in a great way!

Although it is a medieval cathedral, various reconstructions give the Cathedral a neoclassical 19th-century appearance. The environment is also neoclassical, colliding with a city so steeped in history.

This is a surprising front for a cathedral but why not. However the belfry resembling a beacon for boats, I do not really understand. We struggled to get inside (between the opening hours and the marriage which took place that day) and I was a little disappointed by the Interior. If I hadn't taken pictures, I don't remember it.

A must see sight in the very centre of Vilnius. Beautiful both on the inside and outside, with two entrances. It's active as a church and you're welcome to join a mass. My mother did on Easter and she was moved to tears.

Beautiful Cathedral, a little unusual looking when you are used to seeing Cathedrals in North America. I loved the giant statues in the front.

Classical style architecture makes a nice change for a cathedral in this region. Pleasant enough spot to sit for a while.

A must-see for tourists. Best if you have a guide to tell you about famous people burried here
