Aušros Vartai, Vilnius

4.2
The sole surviving example of the five gates that once ringed and protected Vilnius, Aušros Vartai represents the site of a Renaissance chapel and one of the main entrances to the historical city center. Originally built during the first two decades of the 16th century, the gates from outside the defensive city walls appear as an imposing and solidly built tower. On the reverse side, however, the gate frames an ornate church straddling the tunnel. Peer through the windows to catch a glimpse of the chapel within. Climb up to the chapel via the door located next to the gate to view an intimate prayer room complete with a gilded icon of the Virgin Mary, meant to bless visitors and travelers alike. Take note that Mary is depicted alone, rather than holding Jesus. • Small creepy catholic chapel set above a gate in the oldest surviving part of the city's walls. Large idol / icon of the Madonna covered in gold that you can worship (and see from the street outside down below). The pope (JP2) apparently once prayed here. Hope he liked it.
  • 5 stars from a historical perspective, defo worth a visit. 1 star for the unkempt beggars haggling coin and harrassing tourits (where are the police??) So, 3 stars as an averaged rating.
  • This is the place with its interesting history of the Catholic faith. Place visited, among others, by Pope John Paul II, one of the many places in Vilnius, to visit and get to know the secrets and history of the place.

  • Ostra Brama is a Sharp gate built in 1503-1522. But nobody remembers why they called. Lit. Aušros Vartai, literally "Gate of dawn. But they have not turned to the East. Riddle. In 1671 a year over the gate, monks Carmelites specially for the image of the mother of God chapel was built, originally wooden, then stone. In the same year, the icon was covered with silver frame. Beautiful Crescent at the bottom of this votivnyj gift of the year 1849. On the origin of many legends and icons of disputes. Someone said that it appeared by itself on the gates of the city April 14 year 1431. Another version States that it gave the Greek Emperor John Palaiologos Lithuanian Prince Ol'gerdu as a sign-gift for the acceptance of Christianity. Although there is a version that Algirdas had brought the icon as a war trophy in the year 1363 of Korsun ' (Chersonesos) after a successful trip to the Crimean Tatars. But his wife, Juliana, Princess Tverskaya gave icon in Holy Trinity Church. However, none of the early books and list of icons and 1672 year 1659 publication icon is not mentioned. But in the 20th century around the icons, a new legend. There was talk that the image of the Virgin has similarities with the lovely Barbara Radziwiłł (1520-1551), Queen of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, beloved her husband King Sigismund and insidiously poisoned mother-in-law Italian Bona Sforza. In the history of romance and a lot a lot of Barbara mysticism. The secret marriage of big love against the will of the Royal family and nobility. Coronation ceremony and Crown, which she wore little more than a year. And husband, loving his wife so much that after her death spends most of the time in a room covered with black velvet and decorated with silver tears, staying here alone with her portrait, dresses, hair tress ornaments and Gold Medallion. But the cast worried such behavior of the King and they decided to invite from Krakow ...
