Trakai Island Castle Museum, Trakai

4.6
#1 of 11 in Things to do in Trakai
The erstwhile political epicenter of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Trakai Island Castle Museum today provides a striking example of an island fortress in Europe and remains one of the country's most famous symbols. Built in several stages beginning in the 14th century, the castle fell into ruin during the 1600s; however, a major push after World War II led to its complete restoration. Cross the wooden bridge to access the castle and its massive defensive towers and gate, situated on a tiny islet just offshore from its namesake town. Within the walls lies yet another fortified bastion. Wander its multiple floors and view exhibitions displaying medieval artifacts, armor, and weapons. The site documents both the history of the castle and its role in the nation's past. Be sure to stop by the grand hall, where rulers such as national hero Vytautas held feasts and state meetings. • very beautiful place, the soul rests. You can simply take a walk, you can go on a yacht on the Lake, you can go to the Castle, which is similar to all the locks. I am heartened by the beauty of the Lake)

  • The exterior of the castle is wonderful, went in winter and really was an incredible experience, from Vilnius train costs € 3 and is worth every penny. Nothing more lose it we are the surprise of finding great completely frozen lake and were able to walk a little, a unique experience. Snow around the ice Castle form a picture incredible. The only problem with the visit was undoubtedly the interior of the Castle, the Museum €3.5 being student and €7 adults has no connection with the Castle or the history of the next town, if that is not a ragtag collection of strange pipes and other bags of porcelain which also cannot be removed photo unless you pay an extra

  • The impressive castle of Trakai is picturesquely situated on an island in a Lake (which was frozen during our visit). It is 2 wooden bridges to the plant. We leave it on the inspection of the exterior and prefer a bit longer the delightful surroundings looked at us. Also the place Trakai is worth a visit with its colourful wooden houses. We are danger from Vilnius to Trakai – considerably lower than the guided tours with the bus for €1.80 P.p... From the bus station, you must run however about half an hour to get to the Castle.

  • Trakai castle is situated on an island in Galvės lake. The castle has a lot of history behind it. Would it be its glorious past, eventual decay and the reconstruction. Definitely worth a visit for everyone. You don't need to be a history buff to appreciate how beautiful the castle is. The islands are also wonderful and are worth a visit alone. It is especially amazing during winter when the lake freezes over. Then you don't need the footbridge to reach the islands. You can just traverse the frozen lake. Trakai town is just a short bus or train ride from Vilnius. Be sure to check the schedules before going. Also, be aware that the castle closes at 17:00 and is closed on Mondays.
  • A beautiful place to go at the end of the day to visit or to watch the sunset! In a short period of time, one can arrive from Vilnius by bus (fundamental to get the bus scheduled to come back). Walking less than one hour from the bus station, the beautiful castle of trakai is asking for multiple pictures. It closed at 17h but we weren't allowed by the security guy to enter at 16h30.
  • Visited at the end of December. While it was very cold, there were still quite a few people here to give me the impression this place is very busy come Spring and Summer. Quite easy to imagine how beautiful it is then. Will definitely be back.
  • You have to pay for taking photos. Watch out for the old lady's, they'll get ya quick cause they aren't doing much! It is a nice site to see, go there and also take a walk by the lake, but it's a bit trashy, I don't know why these people would want that in such a magical place.
  • A beautiful castle surrounded by a beautiful lake. Paying to enter the castle is a little expensive, but you get to learn about the history of the castle and the surrounding area. Which is interesting as it was such a melting pot of different cultures. The information was available in Lithuanian, English and Russian. Would recommend saving your money to enter and take a 45min boat tour around the castle. This place is stunning regardless of the weather.

Where to stay in Trakai

Opulent hotels compete with homey guesthousees in Trakai. The luxurious logdings here feel more like resorts than hotels, where the amenities include in some cases their own lakes. If you're coming to see the city's main attraction, the island castle, consider a more budget-friendly bed and breakfast or homestay. While amenities are fewer, many compensate with great locations, some even with castle views, and will make you feel as if you are staying at a friend's cozy cottage.
