Trakai Island Castle Museum, Trakai

#1 of 115 in Museums in Lithuania
The erstwhile political epicenter of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Trakai Island Castle Museum today provides a striking example of an island fortress in Europe and remains one of the country's most famous symbols. Built in several stages beginning in the 14th century, the castle fell into ruin during the 1600s; however, a major push after World War II led to its complete restoration. Cross the wooden bridge to access the castle and its massive defensive towers and gate, situated on a tiny islet just offshore from its namesake town. Within the walls lies yet another fortified bastion. Wander its multiple floors and view exhibitions displaying medieval artifacts, armor, and weapons. The site documents both the history of the castle and its role in the nation's past. Be sure to stop by the grand hall, where rulers such as national hero Vytautas held feasts and state meetings. • Very nice Castle located on an island connected by a wooden bridge to the main street lined with colorful wooden houses. Beautiful lakes, green landscape, one of the Lakes can be visited in a boat. Apart from the castle on the island, monument-lighthouse of the locality, an older Castle converted into a Museum, in the center of the small town, is worth a visit. Both Catholic and Orthodox churches have their own charm. The Church of the Karaime minority on the other hand does not visit. All these places are easily reachable on foot, the center of the village being small. Attention, it is better to come with a group excursion or as part of a excursion with private chauffeur (about €75 per car or 3 or 4 people depending on vehicle-negotiable-see with your hotel) because the station is far on the other hand main attractions and the Center. Last but not least, do not go on a Monday in this charming village, apart from the 2 aforementioned churches, all other monuments and museums are closed!

  • Trakai Castle approx. 30 km from Vilnius is situated in the same name village on the island. It can be reached on foot or you can borrow (5 EUR/hour) pedal boat and come to it "romantically" on the water. It was the original residence of the Prince Geminidas. In the castle is the Museum of History and the present Trakai, where we can see the life of nots and local serons.

  • We took a bus from the bus terminal near the central station of Villonis. There seems to be a bus that goes through various places, but I arrive at the bus terminal of Torakai in about 30 minutes to go straight. We walked about 30 minutes from the road bus terminal and arrived at the castle. It was an old building unfortunately on Monday, but we went around the castle. There was not a time of the fresh green yet, but I think that it becomes a wonderful scenery if becoming a little warm. The return trip is a lunch break with local beers and specialty pies at a nearby restaurant. I was able to enjoy the street in the middle of the trip. It is recommended that you enjoy the scenery of the suburbs near the hotel.

  • Lovely. Great place for those who love history. There's places to get some great food. I would suggest visiting in off season or weekdays, because it gets very crowded otherwise. You will enjoy yourself, there's some great scenery and you will certainly get a feel of what it was like back in it's former glory.
  • Nice medieval looking spot. There is nice festival held in the summer, which I heard very nice things. I visited it in the winter though, but it was beautiful anyway.
  • One of the nice& best castle which I like from my childhood, still renovated, with nice collection of glass, jewelry, armoury, porcelain, carved wood & many others items, interesting history objects, excursions in & around castle & Trakai itself, not only about old times but now a bit too. Thanks for organisations. Could be better!)
  • Good place for a walk. A bit crowded, but easy to access and visit because of the location.Take in mind that parking on the island in Trakai is payed, no matter where you stop there are parking slots, so make sure you bring an euro coin with ya for the parking meter.
  • One of the top locations to visit in Lithuania. We got to see the lake and the castle covered with snow and ice - a sight not to miss. An excellent spot were to take some beautiful pictures.
