Trakai Island Castle Museum, Trakai

#1 of 115 in Museums in Lithuania
Must see · Architectural Building · History Museum
The erstwhile political epicenter of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Trakai Island Castle Museum today provides a striking example of an island fortress in Europe and remains one of the country's most famous symbols. Built in several stages beginning in the 14th century, the castle fell into ruin during the 1600s; however, a major push after World War II led to its complete restoration. Cross the wooden bridge to access the castle and its massive defensive towers and gate, situated on a tiny islet just offshore from its namesake town. Within the walls lies yet another fortified bastion. Wander its multiple floors and view exhibitions displaying medieval artifacts, armor, and weapons. The site documents both the history of the castle and its role in the nation's past. Be sure to stop by the grand hall, where rulers such as national hero Vytautas held feasts and state meetings. • This is a really nice part of Lithuanian history. The castle was lovely however would prefer if there was a guide that could provide more info and answer any questions i had. Over all its a lovely place to visit
  • Great view at night! It is nice to walk around the castle but there is not enough of the light to see the path that you are going to. So be careful! On the other hand, the palace is amazing!
  • Beautiful island castle in 30 min. driving distance from Vilnius. The area is really lovely, especially worthy to visit spring or summertime for a chance to enjoy not just the castle and it's history but the nature around: the big lake, plants, flowers, the birds around etc. The castle is pretty from outside and inside as well and its exhibition is well worth the visit.
  • Love this cute little village ♥️ I have been when it was completely frozen and again in spring when it had beautiful nature and nice temperature. Enjoyed it both times and recommend to anyone visiting Vilnius as a day trip. There are also many good restaurants in the vicinity
  • Great site that has been well restored. It's a good 25 minute walk from the bus station. Half of exhibition in the main tower about the castle is very good, the rest is instantly forgettable, unless you're into ceramics, glass, pipes, and bad paintings.
